New member with a new truck
Hi guys, I just picked up a '57 f-100 project. The PO attempted to swap a 5.0 out of a mustang, but got in way over their head. The engine is just sitting there loose and crooked and they have a t-5 trans sitting in there with the shifter in the wrong place and a 2x6 for a crossmember. Is doesn't look like the Mustang t-5 is a feasible swap and I'll probably look for C-4. There is a set of new BBK Mustang headers in the bed, I guess they figured since it was a Mustang engine, get Mustang headers. No way they will work. They also gutted the doors attempting to install a universal power window kit. That went about as well as the engine swap. I will be looking for recommendations for manifolds/headers etc. There is a plastic fuel tank, I don't know it is has a sender or not? Let me know what you guys notice from the pics, I've restored a lot of classic cars, but never a Ford truck. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Trey

Welcome to the Orphanage! Nice start with pictures
Looks like a great start for a project. You have all the major components and a nice paint job.
My first impression for the drive train is to remove the front clip. You can remove the inner and outer fenders plus the radiator support as a unit with about a dozen bolts and friend to help lift it. This would allow you to better fit the engine trans and components. Probably drop that fuel tank and see if it has a sender. If you are staying with original gauges you could find a flat spot on top and mount an original sender. It might be a little different then the way I did mine, where you have the plastic tank. I just shortened the float rod and remounted the flange on the donor tank. Some folk have used bucket seats to allow the shift to set further back.
Let us follow your progress.

I agree about the nice truck for a start. You have a head start most would envy. Continuing to agree with Wally, the front clip is first to go. I found on my f350 it was easier to remove the front bumper first. With all of this removed there is tremendous access to everything you'll need to get at. Keeping the cab on gives great reference. Remember to measure from the firewall to things like the radiator, inner fenders etc. Good time to do the toyota power steering if that's in the works.
