1974 Ford F-100 Ranger

Hello, this is my first post. I was looking on Craigslist for a trailer, and ended up buying my first Ford truck. I saw this for $750 and couldn't pass it up. I'm currently rebuilding a 1977 VW Camper, so I'm planning on just fixing it up enough to pass inspection and run reliably so I can use it for hauling and backup transportation. I'm sure I won't stop there though.

Anyway. My plan is to start by rebuilding the carb, replace battery, belts, hoses, and any rubber fuel lines. I need to get the turn signals working. I'd like to get rid of the radiator overflow tank pictured below. This is my first water-cooled project, but I'm pretty sure it's not stock. hehe. I can't wait to dig in to that 390 V8.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I go forward. Enough chatter, here are some pics:

Thanks for looking,
BillyMFH

It's "stock" all right, but it's not a radiator overflow tank.

It's the windshield washer reservoir: D1TZ17618B Fits: 1971/79 F100/350's and 1978/79 Bronco's.

Remove it, you will no longer have w/shield washers! The w/shield washer pump is plainly visible in the pic as it fits into the reservoir at the front lower corner.

The radiator overflow tank (D1TZ8A080B) was only available on 1971/74 F100/350's with the 240 I-6, and mounts on the passenger side.

It looks nothing like the w/shield washer reservoir.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I meant the PO's anti-freeze bottle overflow tank. So do I just need to buy a new cap with a pressure valve and block off the overflow hole on the radiator?

Also, I see sticker that the camper shell is from the factory. Where would I find a back door for it?

sorry to say... but if you look at the 6th picture... you will notice what looks to be a bleach bottle taped? to the (oh this forgetful memory of mine) front of the truck on i belive on the drivers side... with a line running from the top of the radiator to the bleach bottle....

It was originally from Nashville, TN. The chrome plates on the side say Mid-Tenn Ford. The guy I bought it from drove it here from TN a few years ago.

I'm in Independence, MO. Just joined the MO chapter.

I'm mostly going to just get it running well for now. I need it for hauling stuff around. I was actually trying to find a trailer on Craigslist when that chrome and steel caught my eye. It reminds me of a 60's Ford my dad had when I was growing up. I used to love going to the dump with him in it. My kids are already excited about riding around in it.

No, absolutely not!
Welcome to FTE

1976: Power front disc brakes introduced for 4WD's. 1959/75 4WD's all came with front/rear drum brakes.

F100/150's have 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle / F250's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

You'll need to find a 1976 F100 4WD, or 1976/79 F150 4WD (except Super Cab), swap the entire front driving axle/suspension/disc brakes/master cylinder/prop valve, cuz nothing else will fit.

F100's were not available w/4WD after 1976.

Awesome find, especially all original and for only $750! The body looks to be pretty straight and clean and a 390 to boot! On the truck is an original optional Ford topper. My guess is that it's been on the truck since 1974. You have the "deluxe" topper model that included the sliding windows, bright alum trim, interior light, and roof vent. It even looks like it still has the 4 seasons compass emblems on them, which is rare. Most have been removed. I'm not sure if you will find the rear door alone but it you keep looking, you will eventually find another topper and can use it as a donor. I seem them around here for $75-$100. I have restored a couple of the toppers and pretty simple. They were produced in the wimbledon white and depending upon how picky you are, you can either have it professionally painted at a auto shop or you can use a good exterior paint and have it matched. Need to do some scrubbing and sanding first. Great find and I would have snatched that up in a minute!

If you think the disc brake swap is a PITA, the P/S swap is even worse.

Power Assist P/S was all that was available for 1973/75 F100 4WD's, 1975 F150 4WD's. Uses a separate P/S control valve and P/S ram cylinder.

The manual steering gearbox is used, as it has nothing to do with Power Assist:

Two long P/S hoses, pressure & return, route from the pump to the control valve. Two short P/S hoses, pressure & return, route from the control valve to the ram cylinder.

All the parts are obsolete .. very expensive when found. The steering linkage and Pitman Arm are specific to Power Assist.

So, to add P/S, you'll have to use 1976 F100 4WD or 1976/79 F150 4WD Ford/Saginaw integral P/S, that will not simply just bolt right on.

Modifications are required to get the integral P/S to work.
