Tailgate Mod for 2008 F250

Tailgate Mod for 2008 F250
I am disabled and sometimes need the use of a wheel chair. Because my injuries are service connected I was issued a power scooter from the VA. They also had a lift installed in the back of truck. The clearances that I have to get the chair in and out are minuscule. This and I need to find a way to tie down the chair (It has bounced and broke a camper shell window, to the tune of $450).
The Tie Down thing I think I have figured out. However it would be better if I could find a way to make the tailgate swing from right to left instead of down when opening. I have seen this mod on vehicles in passing, but now I need the nitty-gritty to do this on my truck.
Does anyone know of hinges that can be installed that will make the gate swing right to left to open?
The ones I have seen in the past allowed you to work the gate in both directions - lowered (as it originally does) and swing (right to left or left to right).
Any help would be much appreciated.
My truck is a 2008 F250 Lariat, 6 1/2ft box. (Picture to come)

I work privately with mobility equipment. I am thinking that the VA folks had a crane type lift installed in the back of your truck?
They didn't do you any favors there at all. They had the cheapest thing done that would only half-*** do the job for you.
I'm reasonably sure that you have a hitch on your truck, and depending what scooter you have you need to get an outside lift such as the Harmar AL-100 unit WITH the swing-away feature.
The AL-100 is designed for scooters and has an automatic hold down foot that securely holds the scooter to the platform.
You just ride the scooter onto the platform, stop with the rear wheels in the cradle, dis-mount and push the toggle switch up and the lift does the rest and then you just drive away.
I would recommend a cover for the scooter, do not buy one at a mobility store for BIG $$, just take a rough length measurement then go to Walmart and buy a BBQ grille cover close in size for around $25.00!

Get rid of that stupid crane lift, do not alter your truck.
Thank You For Your Service Sir!

I have now re-read your post: First you mention the use of a "wheelchair" then you say "power scooter" then "chair"
A SCOOTER has "handlebars" (called a tiller) for control.
A POWER CHAIR has a joystick control on the arm.
Outside electric lifts can be had with securement devices for either SCOOTERS or POWER CHAIRS
Can you tell me what you've got?
