another possible evaporator coil leak

I have noticed a refrigerant oil smell coming out of the A/C vents when I first start my truck with the a/c on.. smells like the PAG oil in the A/C system.. I got under the truck and stuck my finger in the condensate drain and it's oily, and has the same smell.. the A/C is still blowing cold, but the smell is getting worse..

Two options... Drive it until it quits getting cold - or take it in and have them look at it. They can check the pressures and make sure the system isn't low.

Occasionally, I see A/C service specials from Ford and/or my local dealer... Oily on the outside is generally not a good thing.

Is it fluorescent green in color oil?

If you are still under any type of warranty bring it in as soon as possible.

it doesn't look green.. I will have to get a blacklight and see if it glows...but it sure does smell like refrigerant oil..
I have the ESP coverage for 100k...will have to pay a $100 deductable for them to fix it. truck has about 76k miles on it..

so both of these failures are on 2011's?

I wonder if there will be more.

Is 4-5 years the life of these?

Were have you been Senix? I hope laying on the beach in HI having some beers. Ha. There have been many of them including mine. Same issue. There was other posts on this here with one of them quite long with many reported failures. Mine had about 80 k when it went. It's a 2011.
Dakster if he drives it without refrigerant it may harm the compressor. Mine did. I drove it for many miles then it blew. It cost another $500 for that part and install.

Capt Caper - So there are no low pressure switches in the compressor any more? Yikes...

If you have ESP and are smelling refrigerant oil you probably have an issue that it is worth $100 to have looked at... Now would also be the time to have ANY other nit pick issue looked at as it would ALL fall under the $100 deductible. If anything they should at least check it out and top off the freon.

I don't know about the low pressure switch. I'm sure there is one. My compressor went. They said the clutch was ready to fall off and tried to fix it but no dice. I blamed it on running low off and on. I would add freon but it would run out after a month or so. So who knows. I trust my dealer he's been good.

the a/c system would have to be seriously low on R134a to grenade the compressor...there SHOULD be a low pressure cut off switch to prevent the compressor from running if the r134a charge is too low...since the oil moves around with the r134a....i never looked to see, but is Ford still using that turd FS10 compressor on these trucks? I had one of those go on my 06 Escape, had to flush the heck out of the evaporator, and replace everything under the hood, compressor, condenser, accumulator and all of the lines...filled the whole A/C system with metallic crud..

as for the ESP.. there are a couple other isssues my truck is having that need attention...first the A/C, then the transmission shifting really hard, the odd noise that comes from behind the dash when driving in wind, and the in-tank (low pressure) fuel pump whining very loud..the $100 should cover all of these at once, I hope.

Sounds like it's time to get all of these issues in front of your dealership, mebe2k. Let me know when you head in and I'll be able to check out some ways to help.
