Fuel tank replacement

So, the Ol' 2003 6.0 farm truck needs a fuel tank repair. The tank lining has deteriorated and is causing issues. It has the 40 gallon tank behind the axle (chassis truck) Should I get the tank re-lined or replace it with a Poly tank? Anyone bought a Poly tank and installed it? There is one on eBay for $540.00.

Poly tank. The reline will delaminate again.

Ok thanks. Why doesn't Chevy or Dodge have this issue?

The same reason chevy and dodge don't have their oil pans rust away. Apparently they don't use recycled soup cans to make things out of...

I just replaced my steel tank with a poly tank from eBay last month. Probably the same one you are looking at because the price is the same. It is an exact fit for the old steel tank and it took me about two hours to do the job. One note of caution, make sure the push on fuel line is firmly connected to the fuel sender before bolting the skid plate back up. If it comes loose the truck won't run and it's real hard to reach up in there and reattach it if it comes loose...

That sounds like experience talking LOL. Thanks for the advice. I like the sounds of the poly tank.

I love my poly tank I put in my 78 and I'm damn glad my excursion has one too. I didn't even know Ford was still using steel tanks in 03!

Ford is using steel tanks to this day. I really don't know why.

Yeah, I was on the road hauling hay and it just shut off, with good IPR pressure. Acted just like it ran out of fuel, except the tank was full. I put a new fuel pump on it and it still wouldn't run, it was pumping air. So I check the connection at the top of the tank and it was loose.

So that is where the soup cans went to.

I know that Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - View Profile: Super Duty Service was doing something to steel tanks
that he said seemed to be working.
