Salvage Yard Rear Axle Best Guesses

Alright so per the following thread I have been searching for a 9"

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...axle-swap.html

I found one at a local pick and pull today and was wondering if you guys could take a look at these pictures and share your knowledge before I pull this.

Alright so a couple more questions. I have studied up a little on open vs locked vs limited slip, and limited slip is what I would be shooting for. I am guessing I can just get a new carrier to put in when I do the gear change right? Also, what about the spline count? should I keep looking for a 31 spline? and how did you guys tell this was 28?

I also notice a slight taper at the end of the axle tubes. What does that mean for bearings, etc.?

This would be donor vehicle is a Super Cab and I have a Regular Cab both have 8ft beds. Should I be concerned about pinion angle or would the difference be negligble?

Should I care about any of this or am I over analyzing?

I'm not in a super hurry so I can pass this one up if I should keep looking.

Thanks for the Info!

I dunno how the others knew the axles shafts have 28 splines, but here's the info from the parts catalog:

D8TZ-4234-E .. Axle Shaft-28 splines - Use with AXLE ID tag codes WDM-CJ & CL

Left (column right): D8TZ-4234-E listed in parts list 91 / Right: Look at the 5th listing from the bottom for D8TZ-4234-E's spline count.

Thanks Bill. I see where the "WDM-CJ" is on the tag now, and how you've made the connection between the two pages. I have a parts catalog on CD but an still learning to use it. To that end... I also see there that "WDM-CJ" is listed below on D6TZ-4234-C. What makes this the D8... vs the D6...?

I dunno, probably some sort of design change. There are 6 different axle shafts listed in this parts list for F100/150's.

Ridiculous!

the note says that it depends on the size of the brake backing plate...3/8" or 1/2"
