78 351M having issues starting

Hello, first post on here,

i have been having issues with getting my truck started, it just keeps cranking and slows down the longer i keep cranking it. At this point im afraid that im going ot wear out my starter, i have been advised to replace my battery and my starter solenoid. I have already checked all conections and cleaned off the ones that needed it, but still just slow cranking. also, the starter is only a year old. any ideas or tips?

thanks

max

Welcome to FTE.

If the starter turns and engages and turns the engine, you do not need a solenoid. The solenoid is working.

If the starter turns and engages and turns the engine, you probably do not need a starter. Sometimes, they will turn slow because they are worn or will not turn at all, nearly shorting out, heating up the leads, making smoke etc.

Your battery is turning over the engine, maybe it's low.

But WHY doesn't your engine start? Was there recent work done on it? Timing changed? That will fubar the starting and make it turn slow as well.

I had a tune up done (everything but rotor and belts) and a new carb put on, was starting great and running like a beast, now it doesnt want to start at all without cranking for a few minuets. once its running it runs great, just doesnt like getting started.

Hmm potentially your fuel pump could be going bad. When it's driving, have you tried running it hard? As in giving it a lot of gas, or going up steep hills etc.

If it seems to struggle in these areas, it could be the fuel pump going out. If you are getting spark at the wires and the timing is correct, I would suspect a fuel issue.

I don't know what the fuel pressure should be on a carberated Bronco, nor do I know if they have a valve to hook up a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail. If there is a screw on valve on the fuel rail, it would be a good idea to get a cheap fuel pressure gauge and test the fuel pressure.

In the meantime, if the fuel filter has not been changed during the tune up, or for a long time, it would be a good idea to change that also.

i am getting plenty of gas, but i will look into it, my filters are brand new and full and the pump is about a year and a half old. it feels as if it doesnt have enough power to fully turn over, (while cranking it doesnt even try to fire for about a minuet or so, sometimes longer) and when it does it tends to sputter a bit, then runs just fine after that, i havent noticed any loss of power though.

just had the battery checked, has full cold crank amps, what is the best way to test to see if power is getting to the starter?
