Trans temp sensor

Alright fellas
I have an isspro sensor that I need to install on my 4r100. I have it all installed except for the actual sending unit. My question is where is the best place to put it?
I've watched multiple YouTube videos and it seems a lot of people use the test port on the driver side above the linkage. I found out the hard way that it is a very poor choice of location. A lot of people say that the best way is to drop the pan drill a hole and weld in the bung? I was wondering would it be possible to put it on the "out" line on the transmission oil headed to the cooler? Thanks in advance 01 f-350 7.3

You can put it in the pan or in the cooler line. In my opinion the worst place e you could put it is in the pan. The next worst would be the cooler line. The best place is the test port.

Why would you say that the pan would be the worst place to put it?
I did try the test port and it sheared off the end of the sensor. I under up having to drop my pan to clean up all of the metal debris in my trans.

The pan is the coolest part of the transmission. So at best you will always get a cooler than actual reading. There are areas of the pan where the fluid stagnates. The temperature here can be quite a bit different than the actual trans temperature.

I've recorded temperatures at about 25 places in the pan and compared them to the test port and the sensor on the solenoid body. It was amazing how much the pan temps varied.
