Hood rotting away on 2013 Explorer

First the Mustangs and now the Explorers, Friend has a 2013 Explorer that has 8 holes rotted through the hood and Ford dealer told her its not covered under warranty. Why would they use Aluminum if they can't stop it from rotting away without fixing it? Makes me wonder about the new F150 where the whole body is Aluminum. Has anyone else had this problem?

check the warranty on the thing. I think you will find some info to help there.

My Explorer warranty booklet says perforated corrosion is covered for 5 years.

A rust bubble is not covered, however a "rust thru" is, as far as I know. Either way, it's pathetic on Ford's end and SHOULD be covered either way. I wonder what it will take to get better paint protection on our $50+K vehicles?

Just google "ford aluminum corrosion" or similar. This is a problem with Mustangs and others, just as OP says. "Galvanic corrosion". The same forces that make your battery work. Prior victims, the Statue of Liberty, and the USS Independence, and a host of others going back hundreds if not thousands of years.

Ford should have designed things better when using dissimilar metals.

This really stinks; I have looked for used Explorers and Expeditions in the past, and the hood and tailgate bottom seams on most of the older ones are bubbling. I can only hope that Ford will be rid of this problem with the new F150.

I had a 1960 Austin Healey about a century ago; that had an aluminum cowl riveted to steel fender sheels and underpans, and when the (cardboard?) gasket failed, the aluminum would get holes along the edges that looked like they were oozing pus...
