2001 f-150 code 0401 4.2L
hello I have a p0401 generic exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficant detected code on my truck I was wondering what would be the first thing to check to get ride of this code? my truck hesitates from a stop while excelerating to several thousand rpm. should I try replacing the dpfe sensor? what does dpfe stand for? do they sell this sensor at oreilys or do you half to get this a the dealership?

Your not able to interpret the code well enough so do not try guessing what to do.
The DPFE is only one part of the total system and is a sensor only.
For replacement of this sensor a Ford part is the preferred part due to the precision it needs to have.
First understand what the code is due to.
401 code is one test indicating a low flow test failure.
It could be the DPFE, blocked ports, faulty EGR or any associated parts.
Diagnosis is the way before changing parts unless that is what you want to do.
Good luck.

fixed it myself
bluegrass7 you were no help what so ever thanks but no thanks. I asked for suggestions to repair the problem and you gave me none. anyways I had to replace the coilpack number 3 cyl was not fireing all the time like it should. that fixed the running problem. all I did was pulled each wire off at the coil pack to see if the spark was jumping from the pack to the wire. number 3 was not. To turn off the service engine soon light I just replaced the dpfe sensor with a new one I purchased from advance auto parts it was around 30.00. I hope this helps anyone else looking for answers.

To check the ports you apply vacuum to the EGR valve while the engine is idling, if the engine stalls or nearly stalls, the ports are clear. If the engine barely responds or starts skipping, the the ports are clogged. Clogged ports can cause a misfire if all but one port is clogged and EGR is commanded on then all the EGR gas goes to one cylinder leaning it out enough to misfire. The ports are under the upper intake manifold.
