2002 F150 5.4 supercrew 4x4 89000 miles. every once in a while when I start the engine it will have a horrible rattle sound until oil pressure comes up then it will virtually go away. the bad part is it won't do it every time. also sometimes it will rattle but the oil pressure will be ok. I bought the truck used with about 70000 miles. only motorcraft syn blend 5w20 oil and 820s oil filters are used on this truck. any ideas would be great!

 

some engines have some piston slap on startup. Not much you can do about that. The filter has a check valve to stop drain back. Some filters do not have this, the Motocraft does have the valve. If oil drains back, you have to buildup pressure in the filter and line on startup........... might be worth changing the filter just to make sure the valve is not stuck open.

 

well, it's done this with every motorcraft filter that I've ever had on the truck. I have read that sometimes the tensioners and chain guides will wear out. I would hope that that's not what it is.

 

With 89K miles I would hope not. I traded in a 2001 with 250K and my 2002 has 120K on it... no valve / chain noise.
