I am getting a lifter noise on startup after the truck sits for a couple days. It is a 5.0 with 155 k on it.
I only drive it every few days and it doesnt really use any oil but am wondering if it is the lifter bleeding down or what. It is driving me nuts and kinda embarassing!
Any ideas????
After sitting a few days, most of the oil in the upper parts of the engine will have drained back to the pan. When you start ut, the engine will have to refill all the passages and build sufficient pressure. In an old engine this might take a bit of time and you might get lifter noise.
You also might be using an oil filter that doesn't have the recommended anti drain back valve per Ford spec. I forget which aftermarkets have it. I know Motorcraft does. One way to minimize the effect of no drain back is to prefill the filter with oil before installing and not let it sit for too many days. If the filter sites with the can vertically the drainback issue is not as big a deal. Not sure how it sits on a 302.
The 302-351W oil filter sits at a 45 degree angle on the block. It would be partly filled if the anti-drainback valve leaks. I agree on the Motorcraft filter. My truck sometimes sits for a week and there is instant oil pressure on startup.
