White Smoke, No Power - Cold AND Hot

Just purchased 1999 F350 7.3 with 206,000 miles. It was smoking when I got it.
Truck starts and runs but has no power and blows lots ofwhite smoke – while cold and after warming up. I don’t have any history on the truck, we just purchased it.
Ran buzz test while engine cold – all injectors buzzed, butseveral sounded weak. Changed oil and oil filter used Two quarts of Hot Shot’sStiction Eliminator. Ran truck about anhour in driveway before running buzz test again. I didn’t notice any difference.
Used AE to check codes – there were LOTS of them!

GEM
· <!--[endif]-->B1352 Ignition key circuit fault
· <!--[endif]-->B0500 Vehicle speed sensor
· <!--[endif]-->B1450 Wiper washer / delay switch

Airbag
· <!--[endif]-->B1318 Battery voltage low
· <!--[endif]-->B1891 Air bag tone warning short to battery
· <!--[endif]-->B1869 Lamp air bag warning indicator

Enhanced Power train
· <!--[endif]-->P0237 Turbocharger boost sensor A circuit low
· <!--[endif]-->P0603 Internal control module Keep alive memoryerror
· <!--[endif]-->P0705 Transmission range selector circuitmalfunction
· <!--[endif]-->P0708 Transmission range sensor High input

We then ran a Cylinder Contribution Test:
P0275 Cylinder 5 Contribution balance fail

I ran this test several times. On one particular run, I was playing with theheadlight switch and the results were different:
· <!--[endif]-->P0275 Cylinder 5 Contribution balance fail
· <!--[endif]-->P2084 Cylinder 8 Contribution balance fail
· <!--[endif]-->Battery voltage low (don’t remember if itreported a code, if it did, we already listed it as B1318)

Under the hood, we found a number of electrical connectorsdisconnected – we reconnected all of them. We also found what I think was a vacuum line disconnected at the bottomof the fuel bowl – we are going to reconnected it, but have not yet. Any chance this is the fuel drain line - Yes, drained fuel from bowl today and can see it dump into valley.
I stated above, we ran the truck for about an hour. We looked at the following items in AE andtook readings before starting the truck and after it was up to temp.

<o> My son took pictures and video - he hasn't sent me the ones from when the engine was up to temp.</o>
We checked fuel pressure at the fuel bowl – Upper port (beforefilter) and found it to be: KOEO – 65 PSI

Today I pulled the passengers side valve cover. 3 injectors are not original to the truck and appear to be replaced at different times as they are not the same. I disconnected 3, 5 and 7 while running the engine. I didn't get the expected results. The truck continued to run with little to no change in idle speed or sound. When I disconnected 1, the idle changed but not much. NOTE: the truck ran fine with all 4 injectors disconnected!!!! Any ideas what's going on with my truck or where I should start troubleshooting?

Please make sure you post your results.
Posting videos of the exhaust and oil filler tube blow-by would help these engine gurus help you.
(I have the same issue but have never gotten back to the truck to finish diagnosing it.)
In the meantime, does it look like the video in this guy's thread?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-3-issues.html

He never got back to us to post his results. We hate that.

Might want to take a look at the three videos I found on youtube and posted at the end of page two as well.

Good Luck! And please post what you find.

AE has a record feature, it will log all of your selected PIDs. I set mine to record the Cylinder Rotational Velocity on all the cylinders before I did the CCT, and I recorded the results during the test. The AE class will have the settings for logging, just keep following the posts with screenshots and you'll get there.

There are links in my signature - I would start with the UVCH link, jump to the last link, and work out from there.

Appreciate the responses - Not sure I like what I'm thinking right now. Tim - It runs like your 7 cylinder 7.3. The videos of the smoke and almost no power. We drove the truck about 40 miles home the night we bought it. About half of those miles were on the expressway. It's top speed is much better than your 35 or so, but it would slow way down when going up hills and the RPMs don't want to get above about 2350. I pulled 2 injectors today - It doesn't look like an o-ring problem to me. I'm going to try to run a compression test - We'll see.

Tugly - Looked at the UVCH troubleshooting link, I have to replace mine on the passenger side. The plastic around the injector connectors just fell apart when I pulled them off.

Thanks for the direction.

Picked up a Harbor Freight diesel compression test kit, but it doesn't have an adaptor that will fit the glow plug hole. got a nipple from Ace Hardware, but it isn't long enough for me to tell if it fits. Does anyone know the correct thread size of the glow plug hole?

M10 x 1.0 o-ring boss, but you'll need a flexible hose like a grease gun whip. Parker has an adapter to 1/8 NPT.

Alternately, you can get a Mityvac MVA-5605 and have a hydraulics shop cut the Mityvac quick connect off and install an 1/8 NPT on it, then screw one of the extra HF quick connects into that.

Went by the local Parker store yesterday morning. They don't have the connector's I need. So, I ordered the Mityvac MVA5605 yesterday. It should be here on Thursday.

It'll be the weekend before I can run the compression test.

Mityvac whip came in, but it will not connect to my compression test gauge. I'll have to find something else to use or get a new gauge.

I hooked up the new UVCH and ran a buzz test. It sounded fine to me. However, I'm now receiving several new codes on 1, 3, 5, 7. P1271, P1273, P1275, P1277 High to Low Side Open. I'm also getting P1293 Injector High Side Open - Bank 1.

I have videos of the Buzz Test, White Smoke from exhaust, and of the truck running with all of the passenger side injectors unplugged. It doesn't look like I can publish movies on this site, so, I'll publish them to YouTube and see if I can provide a link.

Hopefully someone on here can provide some guidance.

Thanks,

Tripp

All 4 of them are AB. The truck is an early 99.

Could you post a video up showing any blow-by out the oil filler tube?

Then see if you can rest the oil filler cap upside down on the oil filler tube and post that video up as well.

I have that smoke, BTW. So I am very interested in what you find.

Tim, Will try to get to the valve cover back on tomorrow to show the oil filler tube blow-by. I really wanted to do the compression test first, but that's not going to happen with the holiday weekend - can't get the right fitting on the MityVac hose until Tuesday.

I was just playing with the truck and decided to take the exhaust temp right where the manifold bolts to the engine for each cylinder. Driver's side from front to back, 159, 228, 224, 196. Passenger's side 88 (later measured 130), 214, 170, 160.

I don't know what the allowable spread should be but doubt it's that far off.

Anyone know what normal is?
