E4OD or 4R100

Simple question, I hope. How do I tell if I have an E4OD or a 4R100 in my truck. It is a 1998 F-150 4X4 with 5.4L motor. Build date 07/1997.

I'm guessing you have a 4r70w because I don't believe the 100s made it into the light trucks except for the Navigator. Great trans either way. The hydraulic ones are very reliable.

My trans has 20 bolts on the pan. The 4R70 only has 14. The E4OD and the 4R100 both have 20.

5.4L's in '97 and '98 had the E4OD, 4R100 wasn't until at least '99 and by that time they started putting 4R70's behind at least some of the 5.4L's.

Sometimes, I am stupid. Trans code is E. And just as an FYI, my local parts store lists all three transmissions, 4R70, E4OD and 4R100, as being available in 1998.

The 4r100 is the updated E4OD given a new name and uses different fluid specs and internal disc and band materials plus changes in various connecting and calibrations to meet the model years advancements.
Good luck.

The 4R100 was used in vehicle production starting 1/5/1998. A vehicle built before then would have an E4OD if it has a 20 bolt pan.

Mine came with the E4OD 10/98. I had it rebuilt and fully updated installing the 6 gear steel planetaria's instead of the stock 3 gear aluminum ones where the splines can strip out. The shop said it was virtually an R4100 now. It's a great trans. The original lasted 177,000 before the clutches burned out.
