Just got my first Ford Truck !

Found me what looks like a solid 2002 F-150 with 188k miles. After driving it for about 500 miles "Service Engine Soon" light has come on. Any idea what this might be ... maybe tied to the odometer. The motor sounds fine. I had the brakes and bearings replaced right after i got it. Only work so far.

So, i guess i need advice on what to watch for with a truck this age, so this can be my last truck !

Congrats on entering the truck world & to this site FTE

If you have the Service Engine Soon (SES) light on then you have a "tripped code".....so you can run down to Advanced Auto Or O-Reillies ...or your favorite parts store. {Most parts stores will read the codes for free}.

write down the tripped codes...then report back here with the codes that came up.

We can spit ball guess as to what is happening for you...but that is all they would be is guesses . The code will give us a direction to look for & there by saving you time, money, and frustration. There is a great host of knowledge here....all ready to help.

But you need some more details about your truck....Is it 4x4? What size of engine? 4.2 V6 , or 4.6 V8, or 5.4V8?? Automatic tranny of Manual?

anymore info on the problem other than SES light? runs rough? hard starting? ect

any modifications?

Welcome to the fold.

Many codes are nuisance codes and don't cause any real problems. The only way to take care of it is to find someone to draw the code(s) as e&b suggested.

Don't worry, give us some information and we can help you sort it out.

BTW, good looking truck.

Gonna call her "Great White"

It's XL model, standard cab, 6 cylinder, i guess the only options it has is automatic transmission and A/C. Those two my wife insisted on ! I'll get those codes this week.
