Alternator fried, new one is shorting out
Hi,
I have a 1993 F350, with 7.5L.
Yesterday I smelled a burning smell and noticed the alternator wiring was fried. Its the stud that cooked, the pig tail is OK. Today I got a new alternator and spliced in all new wiring going back to the fusible link to the fender mounted relay.
After every thing was done I tried to hook up the battery cable and it shorted in a bad way. In trying to eliminate the cause I disconnected the wires from the stud at the back of the alternator and there is no more short, but I can't drive it like this because the battery is not being charged. I am sure I did the connections right. The wires were tight.
Can a bad relay cause this, or is the problem somewhere else. The truck will start and drive without the alternator wiring hooked up.
Thanks
