crane cams 444232 valve springs

Hey there, just picked up a crane cams 444232 cam and lifter kit for a rebuild i'm doing on a 1989 f250 351w.

The cam came with a sheet that says what spring rate is required, but I cant find what the stock valve spring rates are on these.

So, will the stock valve springs work with this cam or not? It's not that aggressive so I would assume it would. If not, what springs do ya'll recommend?

The specs that crane gave me are as follows...

closed- 107 lbs @ 1.700"
open- 248 lbs @ 1.260"
Or 1 45/64 (not sure what this one means)

Thank You for any insight

Stock springs produce 75lbs @ 1.78" and 200lbs @ 1.2" and of course get weaker with age so new springs are always recommended. The cam will work with the stock springs but it may be a little noisier than it should be.

My two cents: always upgrade the springs to the desired springs. you can always swap springs with the heads on the motor with an air compressor and a bung that threads into the spark plug hole and connects to the air line. One of those constantly running compressors is not recommended, but a nail gun compressor will work fine.... If you run the stock springs and notice float then you have to replace the springs with stiffer springs.

I'm having some difficulty finding a set of springs that are the specs listed. I assume they don't have to be exactly the same.

How about these? Crane Cams 36308-1 Crane Cams Valve Springs & Retainer Kits - Free Shipping on All Orders @ JEGS

Are new retainers required or just a good idea?

If any of you have experience with a particular spring, throw in you 2 cents.

Thank you

Yeah that should do it, notice the open rating is at 1.15" while the recommended spec in your fist post is at 1.26", so if you were to work backwords these springs might generate 280-290lbs at 1.26". Also note that the Crane 444232 won't quite generate 0.500" lift even with 1.7 rockers so your springs will never get compressed past 1.2".

Conanski has the math right.... the only other advice I will give you is you have a hydraulic cam.... and you will need to run the cam additive in the oil throughout the life of the cam or prepare for nothing short of catastrophic damage.

ZDDP is the additive you want.. the oil companies have progressively removed zinc from motor oils over the last 10-15 yrs because all new motors now have roller cams and don't need zinc to protect the cam lobes from wearing prematurely.
