Jason I'd definately change valve springs to aftermarket. If you've got this month's summit catalog, comp cams has got a good set of valve springs on page 65 for $42. You can't beat the price or the performance, and the peace of mind. Good luck! Let us know how that new cam goes!
Hi Jason, I think it is a good idea to replace the springs, retainers and locks with matched pieces. Comp recommends their springs part #940-16. The retainers are part #744-16 and locks part #602-16. It may seem a little expensive to replace all this stuff with aftermarket, but it sure beats wrecking an engine because some 30+ year old part fails.
Guys, thanks for the help. New parts are on the list for sure. Anyone ever seen a five year old timing chain deflect 1.5 inches?? Need one of those, also...
Jason,
I just rebuit my recent rebuilt motor. It had less than 5,000 miles on it and my timing chain was worse!!! I am still thinking of taking it where the engine was purchased and seeing if I can get it around the owners neck. I think with a little work I can! They did so well on the machining and then they cheaped out on the chain Make sure and get a good quality double roller chain! crane sells one for about $40.00
