Found a 4 speed OD, aluminum case, T170(RTS) manual transmission in a 1982 F150 351W V8 with tower shift.

Believe this transmission was only available in 1984-1985 F150/F250 models.

Was this transmission common for the era?
Is this transmission considered rare?
Are rebuild parts expensive and difficult to locate?

How would it compare to the 4 speed T170F(RUG) OD top loader style manual transmission used in 1978-1984 F100/F150 models?

 

I don't know how it would compare to the other tranny, but it's considered weak compared to the granny 4 speeds. But it does have overdrive which can be important for fuel consumption. I have also heard complaints about the gears being spread too far apart, which drops the engine rpm too much sometimes.

We see a few on here that have problems and need repair, I am not sure how hard it is to find parts for it.

 

I recently bought a 87 F-150 V8 5L, and I'm looking for a good rebuild kit for its manual trans (with synchro's). Do yall think you could help a newbie out? Nearly drove myself crazy trying to find one myself.

 

What transmission do you have? I see you posted in a 4 speed overdrive thread. Are you sure that is what you have?

Tried both, T.P.D.'s servers are down (I've tried it) and Drivetrain leads me down a rabbit hole that I can't figure out.

 

For those looking for a rebuild kit for a 80's-87' t170ft/3-speed overdrive google "BK112". "BK112WS" if you want synchro's included.

Side note, Transtar has great costumer service (they also make/sell them)
