There were no 5 speeds available in the 80-86 model years. The 4 speeds available were: New Process 435, Borg Warner T-18, some crappy 4 speed overdrive SROD I think it was called. Those are the only ones I can think of right off hand.
Ford 3.03 3 speed 80-86
Borg Warner T18 80-90
Borg Warner T19 83-87 Diesel and 460 only
New Process 435 80-87
4 speed manual overdrive 80-84
TOD 4 speed manual overdrive 84-87
SROD 4 speed manual overdrive 80-84
M50D-R2 5 speed manual overdrive 80-90
ZF S5-42 5 speed manual overdrive 88-90 *F150 and bronco in 4X4 only, and all larger F series
And after 15 attempts to edit the dang thing, it finaly took, even though it looks nothing like the prepost, at least it looks like I wanted it to here!
yeah, I found out they both have non-syncho 1st& reverse. I guess the t-18 slopes up in the bottom, and the np435 is flat. and has the aluminum cover..
Whatever tranny is in my (former) '84 must be a good one as it has about 200,000 miles on it and still works great. Had one fluid change back at about 95,000 miles where we drained it and refilled it with 10w40 motor oil which has been in there since. THe 10w40 made it much easier to shift on cold mornings. It was a 4speed with OD that had ratios: 3.01, 1.78, 1.00, and 0.71 with a 2.47 rear end. Never towed with it though.
