New carb question for a stock 460
Hello all, I know the carb thing has been beat to death over the years. This is strictly in regard to the newer release of the Summit Racing Street / Strip carbs.
I want to replace the carb on my completely stock 76 F250 with a 460. The only thing I can see that has been changed is the wheels and tires.
I have been offered a Holley 670 Truck Avenger that is under a year old for $250. I did some looking and found that I can get a brand new Summit 600 CFM carb for $312 shipped to my door.
This is just a decent driver, nothing has been done to it in regard to performance parts. If I end up keeping the truck, it will be what I teach my daughter to wrench on and be her first vehicle to drive.
Is the Holley Truck avenger a good carb (for the price), or would you suggest getting the new Summit carb.
I am trying to keep the cost low on this one and I really have no interest at this time in buying an old carb and then rebuilding it.
What say you?

Yes. It is a problematic Motorcraft 4350 Spreadbore.
I have the correct adapter and gaskets to switch to a squarebore.
From all my readings the 4350 are problematic even with a rebuild. I have too many irons in the fire to have problems with a carb I just rebuilt (I have not done it yet).
I would just prefer to plug and play this time.

I found out I read the add wrong, it is a couple years old. The only reason I would consider this used carb is because I know of and have bought other items from this guy. The carb has run well on his Bronco and was used untill two weeks ago when he started his EFI conversion on his 399CI stroked early bronco.
The Truck Avengers seemed to have some issues too, but this one ran good for him, so maybe it's a good one.
Thanks for the input.
I am still on the fence about the Summit carb. I need to see if I can find any newer reviews and see if there have been any marked improvements on the "cons" with these carbs. I really dont want to be doing the on/off thing and sending a carb back to Summit. It's a big waste of my time.

isn't the Summit carb just a redone 4100?
i dunno, i'd take a Holley any day. the truck avengers are cool, but aside from a spring loaded needle and seat and extended vent tube they aren't anything special.
i'd just get a holley 650 electric choke with vacuum secondaries...thats what i'm running and i love it. plus, almost every parts store stocks holley replacement parts (gaskets, floats, power valves, diaphragms). that to me is worth more than anything...

Correct - It is based off the Autolite 4100 & Holley 4010, but with some modern features.
One nice thing about the Summit and the Truck Avenger is the use of annular boosters. Just a little better atomization (from what I read) and flatter torque curve.
Not that this stock 460 will probably respond any better with one or the other.

I bought a new 670 truck avenger about 5 years ago. I liked it ok. It was tuneable right out of the box as advertised. The electric choke worked good and it had good punch throughout the power range and would run on the side of a hill, where the older Holley's wouldn't.
I've just always felt that Holleys burn too much gas in normal street driven vehicles. "Thats just me." I know their is a lot of die hard Holley fans out their and not meaning to ruffle any feathers.
My favorite carb even on a Ford is a Quadrajet. I know you don't want to have to mess with a carb to get it right which you would have to do with a Quad. But, after you get it correctly jetted and with the right metering rods, they work and run really nice with good fuel economy.
I've got notes somewhere that tell what jets and rods I ended up with but would have to do some digging. I have one of the older 850 cfm Edelbrock Quadrajets, but it has been downsized some.
Their are posts on this forum that tell what good baseline jets and rods are for the Quad used on our Fords. You might think about doing this later. I would try to jew the guy down some on the Holley, if you buy it. $250 is a bit steep for used. I sold mine to a friend for less then that. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

30over - Thanks, I may look into that later or on another truck.
He sold it this morning.
I am very undecided on what to run, I have a couple rebuilt carbs sitting on the shelf that I may try first. I have a Barry Grant Road Demon Jr. 625 and an Autolite 4100. While the 4100's have a great following, I am not sure if this 460 is the right engine for it. I should give the Barry Grant a shot first. It will probably be summer before I get to this swap, since the truck is under and surrounded by quite a bit of snow and ice. It's just my 2wd summer cruiser.
