This could be bad news

Went to start my truck this morning and after turning over a couple times I heard a muffled "pop:. It wouldn't even engage the starter after that. Got the "Stop Safely Now" message! Funny, huh?

Anyway, I got 6 codes on my CTS. I haven't looked these up yet. I'm afraid to see what they are.

P2033
P200C
P200E
P200C
P0000
P0000

Pretty sure they are all exhaust over-temp codes which considering the truck never started would be a sensor fail.

Running gasoline in it and the pop was an exhaust fire? (j/k)

I believe Steve is correct, most of those codes are EGT sensor related. Sounds like a trip to the dealer. Probably not a big deal...

Unless the pop was electrical related, sounds like an easy fix with the exception it doesn't sound like it will let you drive it to the shop.

P2033 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 2
P200C - Diesel Particulate Filter Over Temperature Bank 1
P200E - Catalyst System Over Temperature (Bank 1)

The P0000 codes are always reported on the CTS.

I think the "pop" occurred when it shut down.

Does that look like one of the sensors or more than one? Can't see how more than one could fail at the same time. If it's one of the EGT sensors in the filter system, I have one. I cleared the codes and it still wouldn't start. It might be more than I can do myself. I hate to deal with towing this thing out of my garage to the dealer. I'm pretty pissed at this truck right now.

From what I learned on the forum, the code should identify which sensor it is. 1-4 front to back. Hopefully you can avoid the trip to the dealer, at least you're in the garage to crawl under the truck. Just curious...how many miles on your truck?

Could start with swapping out EGT12 (2).

After I replace the sensor, then what else do I have to reset to make it start? I've cleared the codes and it does nothing.

Sometime ya just gotta call the Man. Hopefully it is still under warranty and you can let Ford take care of the tow and the repair bill.

But, please do post back with an update....curious minds want to know the out come.

If it were my truck, I would swap the sensor then clear the codes again.
Key off, then try to start.
Beyond that, I would be calling a tow truck because I don't have resources beyond the CTS.
I had to drag mine out of the garage once already when the turbo became disabled.

I'll try swapping the sensor but even though I cleared the codes it does nothing. The codes haven't come back yet it won't try to start. Maybe disconnect batteries and let it reboot?

It was 25 here this morning so we know it had nothing to do with a sensor overheating. How the sensor can fail overnight when it's parked beats me.

I wouldnt even swap the sensor at this point. The fact that there is now NO codes, yet it wont even crank, sounds like something else to me. Plus if you are under warranty, why even bother popping for the 50-75 or whatever that sensor costs?

If it were me I would just stick some tin foil in the connection, put it back together and restart.

He already has a sensor so it was worth trying in my opinion.
If for some reason that worked, he could avoid the tow truck.

But you're correct, if it was related to those codes and those are cleared, it should try to start and fail again.

I talked to the Service Manager yesterday and planned to have him schedule a tow truck for this morning. However, this morning it started... I can't imagine how waiting 24 hours could make a difference, plus it was 16 degrees this morning. Anyway I'm at the office and I think now I will just go ahead and replace sensor 2. I don't understand what "Bank 1" means but I do know where sensor 2 is. We'll see. If it works, it will save me a lot of wasted time waiting on a tow. The only plus to all this is that it gives me an excuse to drive the Vette. Which by the way has never given me one single problem. knock, knock
