school me on my 09 v10

I traded in my 06 GMC 2500hd Duramax and got an 09 f350 lariat CC SB 4wd, I loved the duramax allison especially on level 3 tuning but the rest of the truck POS, I decided to go a v10 gas in a high quality Ford truck as I dont tow enough to have a diesel.

I have a fs3000 weekend warrior trailer I tow about 2-4 times a year about 250 miles each way to Parker AZ so up the 10 fwy up a grade Chiraco Summit.

Truck already has a magnaflow and I am told it has 3" stock exhaust, five star tuning is already planned, what else is a worthwhile mod? CAI? on my last truck the factory one was better than aftermarket.

Anyone making cams for these beasts, turbos, superchargers for the 3v's
I was looking at the 6.2 but the v10 has such a great record for reliability and I like the 08-10 exterior body styling better than 11-13.

I drove 225 miles to get this truck as v10's are rare in so cal in the 08-10's, I got 13.2 mpgs running about 75-80, mileage is not my main concern, power is. Truck has 4.10 gears.

It sounds like a 6 banger..........even my wife said that, one of the best sounding v10's I have heard had a 4" dual setup with no muffler.
I wonder how that is performance wise? or drone in the cab?

Nice post. I'm in the same boat as I picked up a 2008 F350 Lariat CC LB 4x4 V10 for almost the same reasons. I've unfortunately had ALL of my diesels let me down in a very costly way. Even the good ol' 96 F350 7.3 blew an injector and melted a hole in a piston 700 miles from my house while towing and on vacation. (2) 7.3's, (1) 6.0 and (1) 6.4 are my history and I will never own another diesel.

Current rig is the 08 V10. It's lifted 6" with 35" tires and I get a hand calculated 11.5mpg at 70mph empty. Previous owner installed a Flowmaster muffler and did some other mods to the exhaust. My toyhauler is the same FS3000 (the Ragen version though).

I've researched superchargers/turbo's and can't find much for our 3V V10's. I'm actually grabbing the PCM code off my ECU today so I can order a tuner from 5-star. It appears our best option is intake/exhaust and tuner.

Love the 3V V10 though. It's also hard to find a nicely loaded V10 truck in my area (they all seem to be XL work trucks), so I jumped on this one when I found it. No regrets - it tows great and is a smooth refined truck. Excited to see what happens with 5-star tuning.

And the official eye candy photo

My ex-fiance destroyed my poor 2000 F-250 V10 Super Duty Everythign from dents, scratches, broken bug shield, paint from her garage on the box, tailgate, front bumper. Headlights, and spills in the cab.

The aftermarket stuff for the 3v v10 interest me as well but the most I will probably do is exhaust and a tune. Tried a strait pipe with the stock pipe and it sounded like a Cummins under 2.5k rpm above that it it sounds like a jet fighter. I haven't pulled anything with the newer diesels but I haven't found a 05/06 stock diesel that will put the v10 to shame.

You are correct on this for sure. I've had the same toyhauler for years and fully loaded it weighs in around 12K lbs. I've pulled it with all my past diesels, a 2v v10, a Chevy 8.1L gas with the Allison and my friends new 6.7 Powerstroke. Aside from the new 6.7, all the others couldn't out pull the 3V V10 (currently stock, but 5 Star tuner ordered!). My last diesel was a 2008 F250 6.4 and about the only noticeable difference was the V10 would downshift sooner due to the lower torque numbers. I imagine at very high elevations the turbo'd diesels would also have an advantage over a normally aspirated gas, but a non issue for me. Just the piece of mind that a $5K repair bill (or more) isn't looming around every corner with a newer diesel is enough to keep me happy!

Just drove this 2009 home from Atlanta. I have a 2002 v10 also but found this one for a really good price.

I used an sct programmer on the 02, just adjusted the options that came on it. As soon as I figure how to download the programs for it I am going to order 3 tunes from 5 star.

I did a 5 Star tune, muffler delete and CAI. Other than that, just make good friends with a gas station manager and life will be good. The engines are pretty much bulletproof. Change your plugs before the 100k interval, I use only Ford parts.

Well for starters congratulations the o8 through 2011 are arguably the best of the breed, you have the three valve motor as well as the coveted one piece spark plugs so you don't have to worry about those breaking off in the heads .

The big concern for any Super Duty that is gas powered, that is v8 or v10 or even the new 6.2 v8; is that from 2008 on if the truck is lifted there will be interference with the catalytic converter from the front driveshaft. Many people don't notice this because they really don't use their four wheel drive. However if you have this vintage of a truck and it is lifted or plan to lift it you need to have a narrow diameter driveshaft made to prevent interference. The original drive shaft is a thin wall, large diameter. You can have the same strength by having about half of the length reduced in diameter, but just use a thicker wall size. Another issue common to list is that virtually no one makes a proper front spring rate for the v10. The diesel engines weigh seven hundred and sixty pounds more than the v10 and unfortunately the spring rate for the diesel is commonly used in v10 lift kits. Even if you dig deep and talk to the fabled Carly suspension techs they will acquiesce that they do not make a specific spring rate for the 10 trucks and consequently you will have an unnecessarily harsh ride. Don't get me wrong the Carly is good , but it really misses the boat with too harsh of a spring rate. I have found that an off-the-shelf Rancho springs is very soft and compliance even though it is rated for the diesel. I have a set of custom front coil springs made by Deaver that I will be installing soon and that should even further smooth out the ride.

Lastly one of the great features of the v10 is being able to use the tow-haul mode because of the large power band of the v10 and the incredible intelligence of the torque shift transmission in the tow haul mode the truck will literally automatically down shift for you as you decelerate, especially going down hill and into turns. It can sense what is going on and since the throttle is drive by wire (electronic) it will also perfectly match the RPM as you downshift and so there will be a seamless transition through the gears downshifting for you helping to slow the truck from the rear wheels as well as breaking from the front it is such an enjoyable experience that I use tow haul when I am not towing any trailers. especially in town and also when on twisty and curvy roads. Additionally the tow haul mode instantly changes the shift points to a much more aggressive profile, and a truck behaves as if it has a fairly stout tuner in it as well. You can save yourself some money by just using tow/haul to improve your shift points. If you've already bought that 5star I guess it's too late. I was going to buy a 5star tune however I was so impressed with the tow/haul that I ended up not getting one.

Thanks doofuss, these are things I did not know, I only plan a level, deaver is about 20 minutes from me and I have always used Deaver for my springs, I did drive it in tow /haul and you are right but I think the 5 star tuning goes much farther so I am getting that too, exhaust wise it has a magnaflow, I'm going a bit quieter with a dynomax vt dual outlet, it will only make noise when I punch it, the v10 sound is "uniquely" aweful except at idle and WOT.

Its taken a while and it will take me more time but I have read and learned quite a bit on this forum.

Let me know how the 5 star tune works. Jeff at Deaver designed my spring so he is up to speed on the issue. Even if you are leveling I would recommend a spring vs a block (disc , etc) Carlie makes a 2" leveling spring but again it is rated for the smoker. The thing about the 08-11 6.4 is that it is a tank, anchor, beast whatever. Soo heavy, even more so than the 6-oh. BTW another thing that makes the V-10 way cool is the thin bar front grill, like 911 has in his pic . Don't know what it is called but my diesel buddies always want to steel mine.

The five star is the only mod you need other then lower gears, the rest would be pitching money out the window if you ask me. I run five star 93 octane and love the power this truck has. I have 4:10's, wish it had 4:30's. I tow the trailer below and cross the scales at 22450 when loaded. I would not want to pull this over the rockies but for my needs it is more then enough power.
