Hey everyone;

I disassembled my front suspension a few weeks ago (1950 F3), and during dis-assembly I noticed the king pin bushings on the drivers side were slightly larger than the passenger side... at first I thought maybe that side had an oversize king pin, but upon comparison (right to left, as well as compared to new pins), they were not oversize (also the axle hole is not oversize).

I continued with the cleaning of both spindles; blasted/sanded/primed/painted figuring perhaps that's just the way that side was and the new bushings would be fine... I received the new king pin kit to discover the new bushings slid completely though the holes in the spindle (see pic)...

My question is, what are my options? Also is that the stock spindle? It has a Ford stamp (barely visible in pic), but I cannot make out the numbers stamped on it. Should I replace the spindle (anyone have one? Same as F1/2), or are there oversize bushings I can pick up?

I would say your best option would be to replace the spindles, if in fact those are the correct bushings. They are the same for F1 to F3.

 

The DS spindle must have been bored out and custom bushings made. If the spindle were from a bigger truck that used a bigger kingpin, the wheel bearings would be different, I can't believe they'd work with an F-3 drum.

F-1 thru F-3 spindles are the same, so I'd look for a new one. Should be easy to find with all the people doing MII front ends.

Your reply got me thinking... I went out and measured the king pin hole diameter on both spindles, the passenger side was appx 7/8' or .87" (prob closer to .81 if I had a micrometer), and the DS spindle (one in question) was 15/16' or .93" Could the DS spindle be a spindle for a "J" model? Which is the F3 Parcel Delivery?

Either way, I'm going to start looking for another one, just curious now...

 

I don't think it's a J spindle, the pic in the Parts CD appears to show a much greater offset for the J.

I've installed a million king pin bushing's it seems, I'm thinking you've got the wrong set.

 

You can buy bushings from a bearing house any nominal size. Measure the bore of the spindle and your kingpin and call them & see if they can get them. Then you'll have have them pressed in and honed or reamed to fit the pin. If you are trying to build to perfect standards then you had better get the correct part.
