King pin installation
King pin installation
Oo Oo Oo I just finished installing king pins, bushings, bearings, ans seals on the front of my truck this weekend. I just wanted to say thanks to you guys for the information you posted under KING PIN HELP.
I found that the pins come out pretty easy from spindles, but the axle seems to seize the pin. On the drivers side, I beat on that sucker for two hours before it came out. The right side came out much easier, probably since I was hitting the other side for so long.
Just for information purposes, I could not find a reamer anywhere in town this week so I decided to take a different approach. I purchased a brake hone with a set of medium grit stones, and a can of WD40 for lube. I measured the pins at .860" with no more than .002" variance the entire lenght. The bushings, after pressing into the spindles with a couple of sockets and a bench vise, measured .840" with a variance of at least .010" due to the split in the bushings. After mounting the spindle in the vise, I sprayed the bushing and the stones well with the WD40. Then installed the hone and proceeded to hone them out. I kept spraying the lube to keep the stones clean and lubed. After I finished honing both ends of the spindle and test fitting the pin, I pushed the pin through both bushings to check alignment. Perfect on the first spindle, slightly off on the second spindle. To correct this problem, I pressed the pin through the spindle with a C-clamp to "mark" the bushings then I honed just enough to remove the marks.
Since I was rebuilding the king pins, I went ahead and replaced the wheel bearings and seals, sanded the drums and painted them and went this morning and installed 4 new tires and wheels. The truck now not only turns with a LOT less effort, but it looks pretty darn good too. :7 :7 :7
I know this is getting long but I wanted to let you guys know that your input is read and appreciated whether or not every post is replied to. Keep up the good work.
I will post a few pics when I get the garage cleaned up. Maybe tonight.
