Exclamation headlight relay 97 explorer limited 5.0

Does anyone know where to locate the headlight relay for a 97 Explorer Limited 5.0 AWD?

Dim lights are not working changed the multi switch and connecter but unsure where the relay is.

Does your Explorer have Auto headlamps or Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)? There is no headlight relay for the low beams, but the wiring is slightly different between manual lamps, auto lamps, and DRLs.

You might start by checking fuses 4 and 8 (10A mini fuses) in the interior fuse panel to make sure they are good.

The low beams are wired from the dash light switch to dimmer switch. The high beams are not wired to the dash switch.

Like Rod said check fuse 4 & 8 & with the low beams turned on check for 12 volts at these fuses. No voltage means the dash switch is probably shot.

To 87 XLT's point, checking for voltage at the fuses will at least tell you which side of the fuses you need to be looking at. If you have voltage at the fuses with the headlights on, then you need to be looking between the fuses and the headlight grounds. If you do not have voltage at the fuses, then the issue is between the battery and the fuses (includes headlamp switch, multifunction switch, and possibly some other items if you have Autolamps or DRLs).

On many cars the DHS (dash headlight switch) supplies voltage for the high & low beams. On these cars if the high or low beams are working the DHS is not the problem.

On a 97 Explorer the DHS only supplies voltage for the low beams. This is why on a 97 Explorer the high beams can work just fine & the low beams are dead.

The wire from DHS to dimmer switch is red/yellow stripe. Wish I had a way to post my wiring diagram. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

Well, if checking voltage isn't your thing the only thing you can do is replace the DHS & hope for the best.

If you don't mind not having the Lamp Out Warning Module, you can bypass it. Connect wire 1 (white/light green) to wire 11 (dark blue/white) and connect wire 12 (dark blue/light green) to wire 13 (dark green/orange). These are the wires terminal locations at the lamp out warning module.
