Stand Pipes and Dummy Plugs - not on early 2004?

Am I right in that early 2004 does not have stand pipes and dummy plugs?

If you have straight oil rails, you don't have them.

If you have the wave oil rails, you do.

Locaiton of ICP sensor: if it's under the turbo, you have the straight rails, if it's on the valve cover, you have the wave rails.

Ahh, so I located my IPC sensor. I have the wavy oil rails.

I guess I need to put that back on my list of things to fix (preventative) ....?

Thanks Bryan.

I think I know why I was confused by saying early 2004 (from the door sticker 02/04). Looking back at my carfax I see Ford replaced the engine in 2009.
Still says 2004 on the Emissions Label, but maybe a later 2004 is in it now.

I am far from an expert, but I think there is some bad info in this thread. I did not think the late 04 ( with icp on passenger valve cover) had the dummy plugs and stand pipes that the 2005s up have. I know the late 04 does not have the stc hpop fitting because it has a different hpop.

Someone please confirm that I won't be needing to replace my dummy plugs and stsndpipes in my late 2004 like has to be done on the 2005 and up models.

All 6.0's have stand pipes and your 04 has dummy plugs. "Late" 04 model trucks went into production after 9/29/03. Any motor with an ICP sensor on the passenger side valve cover has wave rails.

AFA replacing them just for grins and giggles, I think it's absolutely a waste of time and money. My standpipes have been in and out several times and never leaked and I've never replaced my dummy plugs. I think you're taking more chance at damaging something unnecessarily than if you just let sleeping dogs lie. Now if you're already there repairing something? Go for it.

Tim thanks for helping this guy out!

There was an update (around late 2010 or early 2011) in the dummy plugs and standpipes that NO 6.0L came with off of the production line (except maybe the last model year E-series in 2010). They have proven to be more reliable. As Tim said - waiting until you start experiencing an issue is not a bad strategy, unless you drive in areas that you can not afford to be stranded in.

There were different part numbers for the updated parts .... 03 and early 04 standpipes and the late 04 and up standpipes:
03 and early 04 : 3C3Z-6N853-BA
Late 04 and up : 6E7Z-9A332-A

For some reason Tousley (AutoNation) still lists the early part number (3C3Z-6N853-BA) for 2008-2010 E-series. Tim - can you comment on that?

My understanding is the 04 standpipes and dummy plugs aren't as prone to failure as the 05 and up. There must have been enough problems with them to justify engineering updated parts for them so in an 05 and up I think it is a good thing to do as a preventative measure, that and the STC fitting.

I remember Mike Chan making a comment about that. IIRC there was some kind of small change to the oil rail, but I don't believe that the standpipes and dummy plugs are different as far as fitment or replacement part numbers go.

Wow, this is news to me. I bought my 04 because it had a new hpop and I didn't think it would ever need SPs and DPs. I've never heard of an 04 having to replace SPs and DPs. Although the replacement part is the same as the 2005 up, are you guys sure there's not a difference between the late 04 and the 05 Up SPs and DPs that make them lead prone to failure?

Am I mistaken in saying the late 04 SPs and DPs are led prone to failure? Does the late 04 have the vBulletin sane failure rate for the dps and spa as the 2005 and up?

With digital gauges the SP and DP issue can usually be noticed and caught before it becomes a big problem.

The original STC fitting is the one that can implode with no warning.

I have never seen a dummy plug or standpipe o-ring fail on an '04 engine. I have seen hundreds on the new and improved '05-up engines.

The '04 with the wave rail has dummy plugs that take a 1/2" square drive rather than an allen like the '05-up plugs.

So the late 04 DPs and SPs ARE differently than the 2005 and up. It appears this difference has resulted in a much lower failure rate than the 2005 and up.

Thanks, Daniel.
