1997 F350 5-Speed Manuel 7.3 Banks Turbo 4x4 Transmission blown

Got a big problem with my work truck, need to get it fixed and on the road asap and am looking for the lowest cost fastest option if possible but the quotes I am getting are higher than anticipated if it needs a full rebuilt/replacement.

Started to screech a bit on takeoff, and light grinding on transmission braking. Got the transmission replaced and what came out looked like grey water.

Then went to a steady increase of grinding just trying to get it home and not stranded with its trailer on the side of the road. Eventually I could not even use the higher gears simply because it was banging too much.

Trying to backup, it felt like I was hitting something every few feet as the truck would stop before something would bang back and then a few more feet could be achieved.

For now its parked, working on getting quotes, some are as high as 3k or so. Hoping to get it done for about half that if possible as well as fast as possible so I can get it back to work and back to catching of business accounts from a trip I had to take.

Down the road as the business grows a bit more, the truck will be replaced with a larger more suitable vehicle but for now it just needs work so I can get to that stage.

I am located In Salem Oregon.

Does anyone have an idea to the extent of the damage, what I can expect the cost to be to rebuild or replace it?

Thanks,

Steven C.

No idea on rebuild cost, but you should be able to find a good used one in your area. I got mine in Sandy.

7.3 powerstroke 4x4 zf5 speed transmission/transfer case

1990 ford zf s42 5 spd transmission

I know there are 2 pretty good wrecking yards in Portland too. One of them is a pick-n-pull. The other pulls the parts before hand and can let you know exactly what they have in stock.

Any zf-5 from a diesel will work.

Called the one up in WA, hope to get a call back on it.

Got a local shop hopefully going to call me back, depending on things, they can rebuild, replace or even get transmissions from yards at times, go through them, and warranty them.

I'm hopeful.

Are you sure the trans is your only problem? Have you checked the rear-end? I ask because I know Bill (Rebilld) just went through this for a guy on an IDI F350. The guy had a cracked tailpiece or housing (don't remember which) on the tranny, so Bill sold him a tranny. Then that one ended up having a cracked tailpiece, so Bill replaced that. Then the guy's transfer case messed up, so he replaced that. Turns out that the gears were all chewed up in his rear-end. Wouldn't hurt to check while you're waiting to find out on the transmission.

What fluid were you running in the old tranny, and what are you running in the current one? Is the current tranny a rebuild/reman or just a boneyard pick? Did you do any autopsy on the old tranny?

What clutch/flywheel are you running?

There is NO WAY IN HELL I would spend 1000 for a USED trans. JUNK yard dont even get that much for them WITH a warranty

here a a bunch of rebuilt units(for the same price). Remember, you need a DIESEL trans.A 2wd one if you are 2wd and 4wd if you have 4wd. And will WANT a s-47(that is what you have now andI prefer the gear ratios)

Yea, the $1000 price tag is far too much, if I get in contact with that person, I will try and talk down to a reasonable price if something else does not turn up.

Got it off to a shop. Took a bit as the first tow truck broke. The hydraulic ram that connected to the bed sheered off so we had to get another truck out to pull the bed back on the first truck and the load up my work truck...
