Just an update

Back in July we installed a Banks turbo on my 1988 F350 w/7.3. Just wanted to say it's working great. I'd rather not do anything to the truck (except oil changes) as long as it's running and pulling so well. What do you think? Is there anything we ought to do as far as preventative maintenance before the spring rodeo season?

It was about $2,500. I hired a local shop to do it. It took them 3 days - It would have taken me 3+ weeks. I don't think the mpg is better if you take advantage of the turbo and go uphill at 70mph. We got about 8.5 to 10mpg on a long trip, hilly terrain, pulling a 7,000lb horse trailer. However, if you drive at pre-turbo speeds, 45 or 50mph uphill, it would probably be better. I am very happy with it. The only negative is a little extra noise from the engine compartment because they had to remove some insulation. I took the dash out and sprayed some foam there, which might have helped a little. Ours is a 5spd stick. I've heard that automatics don't handle the extra work as well. If you are a good mechanic, I'd try installing it yourself. However, the technical support we got from Banks was poor. But, that is true of about any company nowadays.

i have a sidewinder on my 92 350 7.3 and i did it myself. they take about 8 - 10 hours to do and really arent that difficult. as for prevent maintance, with my kit all i have had to do is the normal things. as far as the turbo goes i dont even know its there, i got used to the noise. my milage stayed exactly the same, unless i get into it.

jf350 what kinda of egt's are you running on flat ground??

We watched very closely when it was first installed. Now, I just glance at it to make sure it is well below the 900 mark. I'm guessing on the highway at 65mph it is about 500 or 600. I let it idle before shutdown to make sure it is below 300.

what do your egt get to when you are pulling?? my dad bought a 2000 350 so we havent pulled with mine. i run about 450 - 500 unloaded, i have never loaded it down heavy enought to bother it. 10000 is all that it has ever pulled.
