What is that cloth covering at the bottom that looks like it is going end up right thru the radiator?

I believe the regulator 1oldtimer mentioned is for the steering pump pressure not the alternator. If you are using a saginaw pump, the pressure is adjustable internally with an inexpensive kit available from Summit and others.
Yes, that is my truck but that photo was taken by the previous owner when he was assembling it after painting it. That welded globby mess are motor mounts (quarter inch plates), not sure about that set up but it seems to be holding everything in place. The previous owner purchased the truck with the entire driveline already in the truck. There is an uncut crossmember under the "trimmed" radiator horseshoe (these were old time country mechanics that made whatever parts they had on hand fit) I have no idea what the radiator is out of. It has a mechanical fan and it's about .750" from the radiator so it doesn't appear to be too far forward since the radiator is in the original location. No idea what the cloth was for or why it was in the picture but it isn't there now. I would really love to start over from the frame up but I can't afford to do that right now so I'm just going to make it steer better, stop better, and replace the spaghetti wiring job they did so it doesn't leave me stranded or worse, burn down to the ground. The one wire alternator i bought (through summit) was made to fit an FE 390 and I have an aftermarket bracket for the saginaw steering pump I picked out of an older econoline.
