Power steering pump for 390

I finally ordered a toyota power steering kit from mid-fifty but I'm not sure which bracket/pump will fit my engine without breaking the bank (pretty sure I don't need billet brackets handcrafted by the keebler elves!) I've been told (by the PO) that this 390 is out of a 1969 Galaxie 500. I know there are saginaw pumps available and separate ford pump & resevoir assemblies available as well. Here's a pic which shows the engine and where I think the pump bracket gets mounted. Any suggestions would be great. (I've been researching pumps and I think the engine is an "FE" but I'm not sure what that even means.)
Thanks,

Wally

FE is the Ford desigination for that 352 series family of engines, which included the 352, 360, 390, 427 and 428. As far as stock brackets there are plenty to be had a a pick and pull or even Ebay for that style of motor. The big thing is if you want the large Ford pump and resevoir or the Saginaw.

I have an extra bracket that you can have for the shipping costs. It uses the a Ford pump. I can send a picture to your email tonight if you are interested.

I'll probably hold off buying the pump until I have the steering box kit in my grubby hands. I'm not sure what fittings are on the lines that are included. Ideally, if anyone has purchased this kit feel free to enlighten me on what it actually came with instead of there description "the most common fittings"

Thanks,

Wally

I will send you an email tonight. You need the bracket, pitman arm, and hoses. Mid fifties has items priced separately. The pitman arm is around $95.00 and the hose kit was also around $100. I bought the hose kit. It comes with all the fittings to make any pump work as well as the necessary fittings to connect properly to the Toyota steering box. The only issue is the correct pulley for the pump. Those can be found at the local salvage yard depending on the pump you use.

Evidently this is a new "kit" from mid-fifty since they just phoned me regarding my order. It's not an actual toyota box, it's "a new power box with a compact design that's closely modeled after the original ford manual steering box". It includes the pitman arm , hoses (not sure what fittings, she's sending me better photos). I'm a little concerned about this being a "new" item. I appreciate the bracket... one less item to find.

Thanks again Bob,

Wally

Ford P/S pump with steel reservoir basically the same from 1965 thru 1977. P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.

1978 and later pump has a plastic reservoir, is smaller in diameter, so the myriad different brackets used thru 1977 won't work.

P/S pressure hose has a straight tube with an o-ring on it, connects to the pump with a qwik connect fitting.

Left: Steel reservoir pump / Right: 1970/71 Galaxie/LTD 390/428 P/S pump mounting brackets, similar to 1965/69.

I ended up using a Saginaw from an 89 Ford van with a diesel. Was able to modify the diesel mount bracket to my 289 fairly easily.

Good luck on your conversion and keep us posted on the results.

I ended up buying a bracket for a saginaw pump that I pulled out of a late '80's econoline at a buddy's shop. Then i bought a one wire alternator from summit for $83. and will eliminate the regulator altogether. Still have to put it all together but my parts pile is piling up fast. I have all the steering components, front disc brake parts, new wiring harness, new ignition upgrades, even a new set of dolphin gauges. Looking to start tearin' into it in about a week or so, I'll take some pics and post them when we start.

If your using the stock alt brackets for the 390 (in front of the head) and your 1 wire is a gm 10si alt, it won't fit. The 10si is too long, I bought the alt brackets from a '64 or '65 T Bird to mount it low and then you have to drill out the long bolt hole on the alt to a 7/16" from a 3/8".

The kit pictured is the one made by CPP. The box is a reworked Toyota design according to their website. The hoses come with several adapter fittings that fit almost any pump you might use. Personally I'm not too keen on the tubular spacers for the mounting bolts CPP includes I believe they will put a lot of concentrated strain on the frame. I would make a solid aluminum or steel spacer the same thickness as the length of the tubes and the shape of the mounting flange on the box .

Wally, I'm curious what all that welding is under the alternator in this picture? Has the frame been modified? In fact, I'm curious about a lot of things in that photo, is that your truck? If it is why has the radiator horseshoe been cut at the bottom and what is it mounted to, there doesn't seem to be a crossmember under it and it looks like it has been moved back (or the engine is very far forward)? What is that cloth covering at the bottom that looks like it is going end up right thru the radiator?

I believe the regulator 1oldtimer mentioned is for the steering pump pressure not the alternator. If you are using a saginaw pump, the pressure is adjustable internally with an inexpensive kit available from Summit and others.
