Flexible circuit board

Can anyone explain to me what the purpose of the flexible circuit board behind the gauge cluster is for? When redoing the dash and installing Autometer type gauges is this thing necessary?

Its purpose is to distribute the correct electrical signal from the main plug to the individual gauges.

Do you intend to replace the entire instrument panel and replace it with all aftermarket gauges or just selected gauges?

Nope... not necessary.

But i would advise against throwing it away if it is in good condition because somewhere, sometime, somebody will want a replacement.

If you have an ALT light (as opposed to an ammeter), the routing of the printed circuit plays an important role in the charging system. If the printed circuit is eliminated, power to the 'I' terminal of the voltage regulator must be routed appropriately.
