1976 460 complete rebuild

I have a 1976 460 out of a 76 F-250 and I am wanting to rebuild this block with a big power boost. What are the best parts to get the full potential out of my engine? Right now price is not a problem. Also I am having the cylinders bored over .040. Please help me out not too sure where to start.

nobody answered? well here is what I am going with over the next year as I get cash in my 76 460 with a c6
1. mild RV cam - nothing special, I am looking for mileage and pulling power
2. weiand stealth intake
3. edelebrock 650 cfm carb. Actually,, I've never had a problem with motorcraft 4350 carbs, they seem to work fine & rebuild ok- maybe I'm lucky, but I work with my truck and need power for hauling boats and grave, its not for teenage rubber burning.
4. aluminum bracket kit to make it all pretty, aluminum valve covers, nice looking Ss lines, etc
5. shorty headman headers with bung welded in for o2 sensor- will install propane dual fuel kit
6. rebuilt d3 heads. people yack about dOve heads, but there are not alot out there so I think most of them are BSin'g
7. edelbrock makes some nice aluminium heads- they will probably be the best, as they use roller rockers, etc
8. I'm keeping my stock radiator with a new core. I hear alot about aluminium rads, but the old hd brass and copper radiator has never failed me so why switch?
9. some guys do a 3g conversion on the alternator, so they can put an electric fan in from the mark 4 lincoln or aftermarket to get more HP and take out the pulley fant
10, definately put in a sanden a/c compressor and ditch that York boat anchor
11. glass pack muffler
12. Different timing chain- apparently the ones on 76 were retarded 6 degrees, you want one without retard
13. tuff stuff water pump. not going extra flow, becuase all I've read is that faster water speed doesn't result in more cooling, its bs
14 x3 or some other zinc additive every time changing oil
I'm doing it over time, on weekends. right now, changing out the pushrods and lifters to get rid of the tapping. if that works, will change out heads next which I've already had done. Then hopefully will have the cash to put on the headers when reinstalling. bottom end is good, so not doing the bottom end right now other, freeze plugs don't lead, rods don't knock. if they go after I do all the other work, will pull her again and will put in rebuild short block using my currenc cam.

Go with an rv camshaft. That'll give you some torque.

I run a Weiand Stealth intake on my 1973 460, and I'm about to run it on a 1971 460 (.030 over and other mods) that I'm currently in the process of swapping into my 1988 F-350. It's a nice intake. Seems to do fairly well all over the RPM range. Also not bad on fuel economy. With the '73 460 (rv cam, long tubes, Duraspark 2 upgrade, 600 CFM Edelbrock), C6, 4.56 gears, and 37" tires I was able to make up to 12 MPG on the highway at 60-65 MPG.

Probably go with a 750 CFM carb if you want power and don't care much about MPG. If you'd like to get a little better MPG, my Edelbrock 1406 600 CFM carb has done well on my engine. Most people can't believe I've only got a 600 CFM carb with how fast my truck will run.

Older timing gears can also help. I think '73 was the first year they started regarding the engine with them. So go pre-'73.

Headers can help on power. If you're going to do it, go full out with long tubes if you want power. True dual exhaust after that would also be good.

Aftermarket heads can give you a big jump in power, but some of them are WAY expensive. I've had D3VE aluminum heads on my '73 460 since they came on it stock, and they're decent for power without any work done. D0VE heads are the best stock heads for a 460 because they breathe the best. I've got ported D0VE heads on the '71 460 I'm currently swapping into my truck. If you want different heads and don't want to shell out the $$$ for aftermarket ones, then find either D0VE or D3VE heads for it. Get them ported if you want even better flow.
