460 Help
I AM SOON TO BE THE PROUD OWNER OF A 68 BUMPSIDE F-100 WITH A 73 460/C-6 ENG./TRANS. BEING NEW TO THE FORD BIG BLOCK I AM SEEKING ADVICE IN REGARDS TO CARB & INTAKE COMB. EDELBROCK PERFORMER 750 cfm WITH AN EDELBROCK PERFORMER AIR GAP OR JUST A EDELBROK PERFORMER INTAKE. HEADERS WITH AN H-PIPE. DRIVEN DAILY. ANY INPUT OR ADVISE WOULD BE APPRECIATED
congrats on the purchase.
some easy performance upgrades are
1) change the timing chain & sprockets to the early 460 (71 or older) these were straight up timing sets not 4 deg retarded liek the 73 and older. wakes up these smog motors quite a bit.
2) the 750 is a good all around size carb. go with either the air gap, performer rpm or the Weiend (?) Stealth manifolds. all very good dual plane designs with low to mid range pull.
3) if you wnat to go a little farther, port the exhaust side of the heads to get rid of the thermactor bump. the stock 460 heads have horrible exhaust port shapes and getting rid of the bump and mild porting really helps these engine breathe.
4) while your changing the timing chain, put a good cam in there for good measure. something in the 260 deg range, split pattern cam with higher exhaust duration and not too excessive lift charateristics. say . 47 - .5 max. pick a cam geared towards low to mid range performance. with stock heads, you are not going to make a high rpm screamer out of that motor.
these simple mods should net you around 300 - 350 hp easily, more if you rebuild with higher compression pistons, a real good porting job on the heads and upgraded valvetrain.

Before you do any of that, please turn your CAPS off.
I would go with an Edelbrock Performer, not the RPM. I think it is better for trucks.
Does it have the D3 heads on it? I think that was the only year for open chamber 460 heads... You still might be ok with them, but not as high on compression.
750 Eddie is a great carb for the 460.
