351 cleveland wont start

A little help please. I have a 351 Cleveland from a 71 mustang in a 76 f100.

I put a new coil on it and forgot to make sure the trouble light was out of the way before starting and ripped the distributer cap off. Put on new cap and rotor. Checked for spark and have 12 volts at coil , cranked and I have spark at number 1 plug wire. What else could be wrong? Something in the points and condenser maybe? It just cranks put doesn't seem to fire to start.

Thanks Tim

Sounds like the firing order is off. Put the engine on TDC and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be on #1 cylinder and adjust the rest of the wire according to the firing order.

Why would the firing order be off, if I put the plugs wires right on the cap?

Well you said that it ripped the cap off. I was thinking maybe you didn't get them back in the right order on the cap. If you are sure they are in the right order then you have an issue with something else.

Check the vacuum lines to the vacuum advance. Check the advance plate under the distributor cap. It should move easily if you push one direction with a flat blade screwdriver and return to normal position when released. If this action drags when released then your vacuum advance was damaged and needs replaced.

P.S. Firing order may be on the intake manifold .......
