I have a 1988 dodge grand caravan and it was running ok, i decided to change the plugs wires cap and rotor. all changed and now it wont start, after cranking it over and over it trys to start but wont fire. If the gap is to big will this cause a no start? I am getting spark and the plugs are getting wet with gas, but it wont fire. any ideas thanks
I worked on a very late 80's Caravan with the 3.0. The firing order is deceiving. They have routed the conductors internally within the cap and you can't see it by just looking. This causes confusion with the firing order when you install new wires. A chiltons shows two firing orders; both are correct. I think they routed the conductors withing the cap so the stupid wires looked pretty on the engine. If I remember right (been over three years now), the cap was set up so the wires plug in to the cap with a firing order of 1-2-3-4-5-6, but the real firing order is altered because of the stupid cap. Making any sense?
I would strongly recommend buying a Haynes manual for your Caravan. They are about $15, and are sold at most auto parts stores. They cover everything from changing the oil to rebuilding the engine, and are a great investment for an old car.
Since it's a mistubishi engine, go to autozone.com and look up the firing order for a 1988 mitsubishi truck>>>>montero. Caravan or the like are not shown for some reason. They have the firing order for the 3.0 in there along with a sketch to help (routing, wires on cap, etc). I'm assuming (keyword) they are the same engines. I can't make the link work when I cut and paste it here.
I don't know what engine you've got, but I'm making the assumption a 3.0.

1-2-3-4-5-6 looks to be the correct firing order for the 3.0.
Dissy turns counter clockwise.
#1 is against firewall on passinger side with #2 at front of car.
1-3-5
2-4-6
I have an 88 Dynasty that don't smoke. It don't use any oil either and has about 200k miles on it.
