Question 99 Ford Ranger Supercab 4X4 driveshaft Thump/Clunk problem

I own a 99 Ford Ranger, Supercab 4X4 and am experiencing a thump/clunk noise in rear driveshaft when accelerating. The suggested action is to replace 3.5" steel driveshaft with 4.0" aluminum driveshaft. Does this correct the problem and if so, how?

I'm not sure of your exact driveshaft configuration, but that thump/clunk noise is a common symptom of the driveshaft splines in need of a cleaning/greasing, or of possible bad U-joints.

agreed, dont throw it out yet. I bought mine 7 years ago now I think? Cleaned and greased the splines and have never had the problem return.

As mentioned, try lubing the slip yoke and see if that helps:

I also had this problem in my 98 Ranger. Replaced the u-joints and the problem went away.

Awesome thread guys, I think I'll be doing this over the weekend. I'm also getting a thumping noise coming from the front end at speeds between 15-50 I've changed both hubs and drive shaft u joints with no luck yet. But this will be another thing I can do and rule out.

Just a note, when you go to do it you will have to cut off the clamps that hold the boots on. I used zip ties, two per position and its held for years now. Probably should replace them just because.....N/M....too lazy! If it works it works!

Great idea, what type of grease did you use?

to be honest, I know it calls for special grease. But I used white lithium. Figured if it didnt work I could get the good stuff.
