2000 F-450 7.3L

I posted here a couple weeks ago about a trade for a F450 I was thinking about. I finally got to go look at the pickup. It has seen much better days but I think over all it not too bad of shape. This is what I know of.
1. Has trouble starting unless plugged in. Talked to a few mechanics and they said Glow Plug Relay. Have to get it and see.
2. Oil leak somewhere. My uncle said he had a leak on his 7.3 on the back of the head if I understood him right. Until I can look it over better won't know for sure.
3. Windshield is in really bad shape. Minor issue but it's there. Also needs a pretty thorough cleaning inside.
4. No bed. Not really sure what direction to really go there. Thought about looking for 2 boxes and lengthen one. Probably easier to build a flat bed. Not really a huge fan of flatbeds though.
5. Rims and tires. Lots of idea's going through my head about this. I did some reading about the Turtle V Expedition Truck. They used a custom 20" wheel that could be used front and rear. I am sure that route is extremely expensive to start. I would just like to figure some way to go to a single none dual wheel if possible. If all I planned was to pull or haul things a dually would be great but I want a hunting tow rig for up on the mountain. My experience with dually's in snow and mud is that they suck.

If I wasn't getting the truck for a good deal I would go a different route. A friend wants to give me $1500 and this truck for my '99 Mustang.

Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not the best picture but only one I have for now.

One thing to keep in mind, a 2000 F-450 was not a pickup from the factory. They were built as chassis/cabs. A stock factory bed will not bolt on, since the rear of the frame is narrower than a pickup frame.

I hadn't thought of that. Do you by chance know how much narrower they are? Just curious if I could weld some tabs on to bolt the bed down. Wonder if I should just do a flat bed. Wouldn't be the end of the world I guess. Just a lot of added weight. Thanks for the heads up.

One thing I forgot to ask about. My Uncle mentioned that he heard Ford had some issues with the 6 speed manual transmissions. This does have a 6 speed. Anyone else heard of this?

The 6 speed in 2000 would have been the ZF-6, which is the manual transmission. Very strong, very reliable. The current (2012+) 6 speed automatic had a few minor bugs, but they were worked out.

Yes, you can fabricate mounts for the bed. I'm not sure what the difference is between the pickup frame and the chassis/cab frame, maybe someone else has that answer, just wanted you to be aware of the difference so you would not be surprised.

Decided to go for it. Just got it today. I looked underneath for the oil leaks and wasnt able to see much. Looks like might be leaking from or around the Oil Filter housing. Also the friend I got it from said the the clutch isnt working right. He doesnt think the Clutch is gone just when you push the pedal down it stays in like the Hydraulic part of it has a "Bubble" in the line or something. Heres some pictures.

I don't know how much you would want to spend, but a nice service bed would look sweet on that. I would look on LMC-Truck and get a new rubber or carpet floor and find some seat upholstery on craigslist or something. With some TLC that truck will be awesome.

If I didn't like my Crewcab V10 so much I'd combine the 2.

measure the cab on a Crewcab truck + bed and compare against what you have right now. that would be pretty sweet to convert that F-450 into a CrewCab.

windshields are pretty cheap. I'd rip the seats and carpet/flooring out and hose her down. be careful of the electronics at the kick panels. you can mix and match parts from 1999-2007 trucks directly into that cab. alot of 2008-2013 parts fit as well...just not the dash unfortunately. seats/door panels from a 08+ would look nice in there and not break the bank
