E4OD without 3rd or OD

This is my first thread, hopefully I'm setting it up right.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum, I have learned a ton so far. However, I still can’t fix my E4OD problem.

I got the truck (1994 F-350 5.8L) with tranny problems. It wouldn’t shift into second or overdrive.

It is not the original transmission. The tag on it says F5TP-HB. I think the original tranny was the F4 something because that’s what it says on the PCM.

This is sort of like my timeline:
1. Truck shifted great from first to second but no third or OD
2. I pulled the code 558 (EGR circuitry). Then I took the PCM out noticed that the capacitors were leaking and when I nudged one, one of the legs fell off.
3. I soldered new ones in of the same type
4. It still had code 588 (later swapped the broken EVR valve out and fixed this)
5. Dropped the pan. The oil was extremely clean and not burnt.
6. Decided to take the solenoid pack off to have a friend who is a transmission specialist test it.
7. He said shift solenoid 2 has an open circuit. Ordered a new solenoid pack (the early one, the difference being the wall thickness on the plug)
8. Took the solenoid pack back to my dad’s garage and retested it and I got all the right Ohm values. So I doubted it would work
9. Anyways put the new solenoid pack in this morning. Also when removing the solenoid pack, we ripped the gasket on top of the valve body so we took the valve body off and put a new gasket.
10. Put oil pan on and filled with tranny fluid.
11. Started up and it began to shift like it was low on fluid (hard and coming in and out of gear)
12. Put more fluid in. It would stay in gear but still shifted hard (never used to)
13. Drove it down the street, now it shifts hard and still only had 1st and 2nd
14. Disconnected the alternator incase the rectifier was bad, shifted smoother but no 3rd or OD
15. Swapped the PCM, still no 3rd or OD. The PCM I swapped in says F5TF ( I think) The only PCM was a F4 something

I think that it is very strange that I’m not getting any transmission codes. Probable cause would be the PCM, correct?

My brake pedal almost goes to the floor. I wish it had something to do with the VSS because that is related to the ABS and the PCM. However, no codes for that either. No ABS light on. I might switch it out 2mrw just in case.

The OD light is not flashing. Does this mean that it can’t be in limp mode?

I’ve checked the wiring near all the plugs.

The only code that I am getting now is 172. Basically, the 02 sensor is reporting that the truck is running lean.

I have 1994 F-250 that I can swap parts out of. What should I try next? The whole ECM?

Also, I don’t think it matters, but the new tranny in it says 4X4 and my truck is only a 2 wheel-drive.

Thanks in advanced for the help. I’m hoping after this job I can help others.

Thank you very much. It was the 2-3 shift valve. I'll do more of a write up on it later.

I finally got to take it on the road today. It shifts perfectly. There were two valves in the valve body that need a little cleaning (very little). They were the 2-3 shift valve and the one that regulates hard shifting.

I believe the truck was sitting a couple of year before I bought it. Since the valves weren't being used they got stuck in their positions.

To check the valves u should be able to take a small screwdriver and push on them, compressing their spring. If the valve doesn't snap back, that's your problem. Take the valve out and clean it with brake cleaner and also get where u insert the valve.

To get at the valves, u need to take the oil pan, filter, and valve body off the transmission. The gasket on top of the valve body will probably rip, but they cost $2.50. Also, don't take down the piece of metal above that gasket, or the check ***** will fall out. If, they do, u have to put them back in the right place, with a special gel.

TO SUMMARIZE:
If your E4OD doesn't shift into 3rd or OD, doesn't throw any codes, the tranny fluid is clean, and shifts like it should from 1st to 2nd, check the valves in the valve body.

Question for you on the time you worked on your E4OD, did you leave the transmission in the truck and work on it from under or did you pull the transmission to flip it upside down? I'm having the same issue currently with a "new to me" transmission. I'm worried about those bearings falling out if I don't attempt to pull the transmission.
