Gas Electric Fuel Pumps to Pump Diesel?

Considering converting my 460 truck to IDI, I just about have enough parts. But can I use the low pressure electric fuel pumps that are already in the fuel tanks to move diesel? I personally don't really see it as a problem, might effect longevity of the pump but should work.

What say you all?

i wouldn't buy a gasoline pump to put on a diesel, but i would expect it to work. i use gasoline filters for diesel and WMO without any trouble.

Do you know the psi of the low pressure gas pumps? If it's not high enough, you'll have fuel starvation issues.

Most of the TBI pumps are less than 10psi. And you should be fine. If it's MPFI there considerably more and probably to high. Make sure if you replace the short rubber line that connects the pump to the pickup tube you use hose that's diesel submersable rated. Cool avitar!

The low pressure pumps are 4-6 i think. The high pressure is on the fram rail. However I think the diesel will eat the pumps.

It's carbed, but even the FI rigs used the exact same in tank pump and a high pressure pump on the rail. Anyway not worried about pressure or flow needs, they flow enough to feed a hungry 460.

It's about the diesel eating or being to "thick" for the pump. I'd figured someone here must have tried it. Strikes me as an easy way to get an in tank electric pump if it works.

Just something about the viscosity and composition of Diesel that leads me to believe running gasoline-rated pumps just won't work. On a smaller vehicle (a Passat) a friend of mine once had to use a gasoline transfer pump to try and limp his Diesel TDI passat home after getting stranded a few hundred miles from his house. His plan was to use this gasoline pump (the only pump in the parts store he could find in that area) to limp the Passat home. It didn't even last 20 miles. Granted it was a cheapo transfer pump, but it didn't last very long. Luckily, that 20 miles got him closer to a different parts store that had a Diesel rated Facet pump. From what I remember, that facet pump is still in that vehicle.
