Well, A 400 bellhousing will bolt up, if 4 spd though, it might need some clearancing. You need a lot, 4x4 or 2wd? You need flywheel/flexplate, engine mounts, engine brackets, pulleys, possibly a bigger radiator and shroud, some kind of exhaust, like the right manifolds or headers, There is not a lot to it, but it can be tough to round all the parts up.

Well, If it is a factory 400 truck, I would think that the mounts frame perches are the same, and the 460 will fit right in, and be in the right place and height, but I have never done it to that model of truck. I understand you want a 460, but a 390 will fit right in (other than the bell housing) and can be made awesome.

It's about swapping from a 390 to a 460, but the info you need is in there.

Ok, 351M/400 to 460 is fairly straight forward if you have all the parts to do it. These 3 motors share the same bellhousing boltpattern so yes, you can use the existing c-6 if you have an auto or use your existing bellhousing if running a manual. I always tell people if you are putting in a manual tranny, bite the bullet and buy the $600 flywheel and clutch so you can use the 351/400 bellhousing. I know its expensive, but its worth it. Some people say you can use a 390 flywheel and maybe you can, I personally haven't tried it. You will need different motor mounts. Several companies fab these swap mounts for both the 4x4 and 2x4 stock towers. The mounts are different for a 2x4 and a 4x4. Get on JBG and look at them. I highly recommend getting a set with the rubber or poly bushings as they absorb shock. I did this swap myself and like an idiot, bought solid motor mounts that transfer all the vibration from the motor straight into the rest of the truck. If you have a complete 460 you can save yourself some money on pulleys and brackets and use what you already have. The exception to this is you may have issues with your power steering pump hitting your steering box and maybe the alternator hitting the frame. I made my own alternator bracket. Kept the same mounting hole in the block and rotated the alternator about 180 deg with my support bracket (3/8 thick alum cut on CNC mill) connecting to a threaded hole on the water pump. You will need headers of some variety, good luck not spending a fortune on those. I doubt you will find any for under $500. Also, for those running C-6 trannies, you will need to check your converter and check the pilot bearing to make sure they are the same size. Those running manual trannies, use the inner (smaller) diameter in the back of the crank for your pilot bearing. Go to the auto parts store of your choice and ask for a pilot bearing for a 302. It works great.

390 flywheel works just fine.. Bolts right to the back of the 460, and is neutral balance. I had mine drilled to fit a 12" clutch for a 400. You can also make your own motor mounts, which is what I did. I ordered 460 mounts for a 70-something thunderbird.. Then you have to cut the ears off of the mounts, and drill a hole in the correct location. Add a bolt, and weld to the back side to create studs.. Worked like a charm.
Seriously people, just read the link I posted.. it's there for a reason.
