how difficult is a 1973 f100 390 c6 swap to a 460 c6? are the mounts similar at all? the problem is the 73 is points ign. and the 460 is electronic. i would have to use aftermarket ign. components. if any of the mounts would work i would guess the tranny mount will.
Are you talking about engines or transmissions? The 460 will bolt in with 2wd 460 mounts and the c6 will bolt to the 460 with a change of the bellhousing. You might have to drill a few new holes in your frame to relocate the transmission crossmember a few inches. But pretty much a bold on application. I have a 429 in a 67 f100 and it fit right in. Let me know if I could snap some pics for you.
like above said just a matter of mountsthe mounts on a 460 are 3 piece.the 390 dist will not fit if you want to stay with points.any 351c 400 429 dist, will fit.
You will need to use the C6 that is mated to the 460 because of the bellhousing difference, and the C6 does not have a separate bell like the C4. If the 460 is running a DurasparkII set up, you can swap that into your 73 too, it is very easy and is a desireable upgrade to the older trucks. For the engine mounting, use the engine stands from the 460 equiped truck and bolt them to your frame in place of the FE stands, the trans probably already has the holes drilled in the frame for your crossmember. There may also be some changes to your drive line, may look into that too. What is the 460 out of?
its out of a 78 f150. i know i will need to use the motor and tranny together. it sucks that ford didnt use all the same bellhousings. i would put a t5 behind a 460 in a f100.
thats why you dont see many old ford engines today in anything but what they came in.ford saw fit to change bells with every new motor.chevy didnt make that mistake.even the new 4.6 wouldnt bolt to a 302 tranny.
What type of automatic transmission will I need to fit my new 460 rebuilt motor that I am replacing the current 360 with? It is going into my `74 f250 4 x 4... Will my current C6 work, or will I need a new Bellhousing or mounts or ???
I'd love to simply drop in the new motor and have everything bolt right up. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Any tips would be greatly appreciated....
Please see my sticky at the top of the forum for basic tranny info.
The 460 has a different pattern than the FE (360/390), and the C6 tranny doesn't have a removeable bellhousing.
FoMoCo never put a 460 in a 4x4, so its a piece together deal. Van Mounts for a 460 will work, so will 390 mounts if you turn them sideways and drill a few new holes.
L and L products makes some swap stuff, including an impeccable set of headers.
Mattsbox99, are talking about 73-77 4x4's without 460's? I have a 79 f350 4x4 np435 np205 and it looks factory to me. I was just confused about the "never put a 460 in a 4x4" part. Thanks.
Thats right.... Ford never put a 460 in a 4x4 until 1983. Most of the time, when I say never, I am referring to the 73-9 trucks, there are a few overlapping years though. I have a hard time telling people that they never put a 351W in a truck until 1983 as well.
