Forgive me, for I have sin!
So yea, I bought an IDI with an E4OD
Well it ain't that bad I guess. I paid 800$ for a pretty clean 1991 F350 4x4 7.3 with 265,000km (165k miles), has a fresher looking IP and injectors, all new glow plugs (don't know what kind yet), 2 new batteries, new brakes all around, 4 fairly new tires and new axle U-joints on the King Pin D60!
She fires right on command and runs smooth. High idle/timing advance doesn't work though. Other than needing a windshield and sooner than later a Radiator (corroded inside), shes good to go!
Drove it the 2 hour trip home (about 100 miles) and wow, very nice truck to drive, drives straight, quiet ride, no rattles, no noise, tight steering. I think this was a good buy
only 1 problem...... ready for it? E4OD.... although it works fine right NOW.... it was low by 2 quarts on oil, and oil is brownish dark, smells fine though, and it shifts really hard from 1st to 2nd. But TC locks in 3rd, and OD works fine to.
Never had any body work done to it, has a new passenger side fender, and new bumper. Floors and underneath although abit rusty, no holes and very very solid!
Took my van out on this trip, just incase something happened to it, that I would of needed to tow it. Have to say, 4.10's with the E4OD is alot more pleasant to drive than my C6 4.10 van
Stopped here before hitting the big roads to top up tranny fluid, add SCA's and PS fluid.
Not the biggest fan of that flat bed though...
Interior needs a good cleaning!

Get that Quebecois plate off of there, that should help the 1-2 shift - :-)
(Sorry the Albertan in me sneaks out every once in a while).
I had 4:56s in my 89 with E4OD and the 1st shift was very aggressive. I found the right speedo gear at the trans, which drives the speed sensor in the early models, replaced and adjusted the FIPL, replaced the ECU and of course filter and oil change. All that softened it up some but it was never smooth.

TC should have a drain plug in it, drain that and the pan (put a drain plug in there while you have it off, change the filter) and you will be able to put about 14 qts back in it and have very clean fluid. Do that every 25K miles (next time just drain the pan) and that trans will go forever, assuming something is not already broke. Clean fluid makes E4ODs happy - I got 250K out of the one in my Bronco and it was still working when I pulled it for a ZF5.

Well considering this one has 165k, has no Aux tranny cooler, and guy said it was his dad who bought that truck brand new, it was for farm use, he use to pull hay bales on that flat bed, and hay wagons...... so it sounds like it's done it's share of hard work.
It shifts very hard from 1-2, and if your running down the highway around 55 like I was, and cancel OD, it SLAMS in 3rd.
I will flush it, by running the engine with disconnected tranny lines like I do to all autos, and if it can last me a year or 2, before I find a ZF for it, i'll be happy.
Also, side note here I just gotta share!!! I just fueled up my van, got 18.1mpg on this trip!!! That's a new record, last year was pulling a 1200lbs trailer and loaded of camping gear, got 16.4mpg doing 60!
Guess this old 400,000 mile van ain't ready to give up just now!
