Big time cold start issues

Any valve or pushrod issues would be there even after the truck runs.
I was also told that I may have had compression issues too. Mine had excellent compression. I'm still thinking sticks but its a good idea to exhaust all other checks as long as it doesn't cost money. Don't throw unnecessary money at it if you don't need to.

But don't exhaust everything else for years like I did. I continually had people telling me that injectors should last 500K and they were fine and I had other issues.
Mine buzz tested fine which means that only the coils work fine. The problem is with the mechanical clearances inside the injector body itself. The poppet wears the body and the high oil pressure passes by until the injectors get hot and closes up the clearances. Mine had perfect HPOP pressure when running.
I was still reluctant to buy the injectors but kick myself for not doing it 4 years ago when the problems first started.

I'd say Jason likely needs sticks. But, a compression test just to be sure that ain't the problem, would be a good idea. As Rich said, if it's a compression problem, new sticks will have you stuck in the same boat. What puzzles me is, I thought sticks usually acted up when warm. I guess that's o-rings come to think of it.

So to wrap this thread up with some closure for future readers.
I went through the spring, summer, and early fall not having the funds to dedicate to putting in new injectors. The synthetic oil certainly helped cold starts and if it was going to drop below 50 degrees over night, I would plug the block heater in and the truck would start. As things got a little colder the last few months, on occasion it will drop into the 30's and once or twice, the upper 20's. Even plugged in, the truck would not start at this point until the temps were above 50 for several hours. So I knew it was time to bite the bullet.
After some searching around I decided on a set of Stage 1.5's (remanufactured) P.I.S. 160cc with 30% oversized nozzles. I had them installed last week but we had a bit of a warm spell the last 5 or so days so it had not been cold enough at night to definitively tell whether it helped the cold start issue or not. I was pretty sure it had, because the truck was different on cold start even though it was not that cold. Since the issue started, even when the nights were warm, if the truck had sat for 8-10 hours it would spit and sputter and have serious power issues until it warmed the oil up. Once the new injectors went in, it was just like the old truck I had known and loved. It cranked right up and had immediate power, (much more now that I had Stage 1.5's in ) but I digress.
Last night it was cold enough to tell. It went down into the mid 30's and I did not plug the truck in. The week before the injectors it did this and I could not start the truck, even plugged in, for 3 days. So this am fired right up, no issues at all, not low on power. So the answer most definitely was injectors.

Thanks for posting this Jason. My truck is doing something similar, and your thread was very informative for me. I'll be sending Rich some AE data after I swap out my ICP, rebuild my fuel bowl, and put some new batteries in this weekend. I'm hoping to get away with injector o rings, but after reading your thread, I now see why they may not help that poppet valve. Thanks again!

This is quite possibly the best book I've ever read.. I was anxious today to continue reading this post to find out what happens! Every break I had I would be on my phone trying to get to the end! I learned quite a bit from this while thread.. I'm pretty new to these forums and I'm glad to be a part of this community..I'm gonna like it here!! Anyways now back to reality and working on my pickup. I have a few good ideas from here, I'm gonna start back at the basics and work from there..
