Early 99 keyless entry "sleep" mode

Guys/gals,
Forgive me if this has been resolved somewhere in a posting. I did a search and found a few people with the same problem but no resolution. I have an early 99 F350 DRW Lariatt crew cab. The key fobs are good to go and work most of the time. It seems if the truck sits locked (maybe unclocked as well -- don't know for sure) for some random period of time (hours to days), it won't respond to either of the fobs (lock, unlock, panic). If I unlock a door with the key, as soon as the door opens and activates the dome light, the fobs work fine. Although it is just an inconvenience, none of my other Ford vehicles have ever done this. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Bryan

My initial guess would be a GEM module issue. Other than that I wouldn't have a clue.
