Changing trans fluid

97 f250 auto trans. Can I just drop pan, put new filter in and refill ?
Or is there more I should do, like drain convertor. I did have a flush done a couple of years ago but not filter change. Got a little hard shifting going on at high rpms, so I thought I'd at least change fluid and filter for starters

Cant give you info on your shifting...

Drop the pan, change the filter. There should be a drain plug on the torque converter too. Most of your fluid will be in your converter. Some guys say dont remove the plug. That is why they made flushing units. However, when I took my truck to Ford to get a trans service, they removed the plug and said "Thats how you do it".

Thank you - pulled the plug on convertor and it seems like I got as much or more fluid from it then the pan
Hopefully I can get it back in, my headers collect rite there

Which fluid did you go with? Merv V would be a good choice unless you're on a budget.

Did not get the last post until I was already done.
This is what I came up with
I am using motorcraft mercon v
Drained 12+ qrts
Replaced 12 - started engine let idle for 15min then drove around a bit
Checked idle in park - nothing on stick
Add another qrt - drove around then checked - nothing on stick
Add another qrt - drove around then checked - nothing on stick

Yikes - up to 14qrts now - was I running it that low? Did I drain or spill more then I thought? Gotta go get more fluid. Bought 8 to start with and went and got 6 more. Probably go get 4 more

BTW - bought first 8 at my local ford store for (I think) $8+ a qrt. And then last night I found it for less then $6 at orieleys (Gresham or)

One more qrt that makes 15 - perfect on stick hot trans idling in park
Orieleys $5.99 qrt motorcraft mercon v
High rpm shifts stiff but not hard - probably be able to tell more when pulling my boat up a hill

I just did mine. It took 14 quarts to get it dead center on the dip stick when warmed up to temperature. HOWEVER, I did install a newer E4OD pan with a drain plug and slightly larger sump. Looks like you were a little low.
