F250 shutting off while driving

I have a 1994 F250 gasoline engine. It will cut off while driving down the road, sometimes it start in a few minutes and sometimes it takes at least a day. Each time it happened I check the firing. During the times it won’t start there is no fire at the coil or the distributer. I have changed the coil. Any suggestions Thanks Donnie

Not sure if you have a Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS). If you do, that is where I would check. Good luck.

I had a '78 Bronco that did the same thing. My brother in law was a Ford mech and he came over and opened up the wire harness under the dash. He felt the wires separately and he told me which one to replace. One was hot and he said it was broke inside. When it got hot it would separate and the engine would die and after a minute or so the wire would cool down and it would start again. It never did it again!

Hi Donnie,

I'm going to split this into it's own thread in the correct forum. This one is for '99-present trucks, so you may not get the best advice here.

Good luck!

Your problem sounds similar to an issue I was dealing with. Some of the guys on this forum suggested coil, distributor pickup, ignition control module as potential problems. In my case I replaced the distributor and coil and it cured the problem. It was the distributor that was causing the stalling and no start conditions

I also noticed ground problems as suggested fixes while searching the forum for answers

My best internet guess would be the distributor. There's a sensor in there that the computer uses similar to a crank position sensor. IIRC no signal from that and the computer thinks the engine isn't running and turns everything off.
