1981 Bronco Electrical Nightmare!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Nov-02 AT 06:45 PM (EST)]Hello all. I have a 1981 Bronco with a 302 and Duraspark II without the MCU. The ignition module is an aftermarket. Sometimes the truck will start but mostly it wont. Everything in the engine electrical system has been replaced ( ign. switch, coil, starter relay, regulator, distributer, ign. module, plugs and plug wires) except for the alt and starter. Sometimes the coil will produce a spark sometimes it wont. I ran a jumper wire from the + batt to the bat on the coil and the truck started. I thought cool must have a short. traced the red wire off the coil into the dash and found a nick in the wire. Repaired that truck started like a champ. Next day went out the truck wouldnt start. Ran my jumper wire and it wouldnt start. Unplugged the hrness from the coil and dist. to the ign mod checked out the wires, had some splices in it. Plugged the wires in and the damn thing started! Soldered all my wires together taped em up plugged em back in and guess what? The evil vechile wouldnt start. It turns over but wont start. I started tracing wires off the coil again but was getting confused with the haynes manual schematics. If anyone has any suggestions short of taking it somewhere( thats my next step I think) the would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all Joe Bronco

It sounds like every time you touch or move the coil connector the truck will do something different. I'd check the connector for corrosion, loose connector, etc.

Thank you for the suggestion but i have already tried that. I cut multiple splices out of the coil connections , and soldered all the wires at the splice. I also cleaned the connectors with some kind of acid ( I forget what kind but it got it very clean) and that wasn't it. I'm thinking of checking my nuetral safety switch off the tranny maybe that might be shorted out. What do you think? Also i would love to know where to get some wiring harness to replace my old ones. Im thinking about ripping out all the wire in the damn truck and starting over but I'm not really an expert or anything, so I dont know. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.

The neutral safety switch won't keep you from getting a spark. It will only keeep the starter from engaging. Look somewhere else.

At thus point I would replace the coil, and or check the EEC relay. If nutrial saftey switch was bad the truck would not turn over.
