I thought that the factory redline is 4500. I have had my old one up to 5000 before, but in reality, they don't make more power above 3000 unless modified for the upper RPMs.

Thats what i thought but i wanted to make sure.. like i said i rarely go over 3,000 rpms..

Normal driving i normally shift at 1,500 or 2,000.

My old 86 F150 2wd I had way back, I use to buzz it up to 5500 rpms many times every day. It had a NP435 and I always started out in first gear. Instead of shifting in the middle of an intersection, I'd hold it in first gear until I got through the intersection. That means I was shifting into second gear at right around 5500 rpms. It did sound like the world was coming to an end though. I towed some heavy loads with that truck and put a lot of miles on it and never had an engine problem. It did get crappy mileage due to the feedback carb though.

Man you need to romp on it once in a while and blow the carbon out of it!!!

On my old modified 300 I ran it out to 5500+ regularly, it sounded great. A stock 1BBL would be hard pressed to run out to 4500. The one in my 69 would self-govern at about that point.

My 86 was bone stock except for a performance muffler. It would easily rev over 4500 in 1st gear. I would shift into second at right around 5500. Would it run that high in 4th gear, hell no.

Unless your engine is already hurt, running your engine over 3,000 rpm isn't going to kill it. You don't need to run it to 5,000+ but 4,000-4,500 isn't a sky high rpm for them.

I'm harder on my stuff then most people are. I tend to drive my vehicles like I stole them.

Back when I was 15 or 16 I had an older guy tell me that the 240/300's where the kind of engine that liked to be ran/worked hard.

I was amazed when I installed my tach as to how low these things tend to rev. 3000+ makes mine sound like it wants to blow up. I've got a Offy DP, a Holley 600CFM and a set of headers with dual exhaust. Not sure what the limiting factor is in the equation. If I decide to keep the six then I'll probably do some head porting and try a hotter cam. But as it stands now, I don't see any merit in reving it past 3000. I recently replaced my NP435 with a M5R2. The really nice thing about it is that with the extra gear stuck in there it's easy to keep the engine in the meat of the torque curve and run it between 1000 and 2500. With the four speed it was almost necessary to rev it higher than I wanted to just to make the RPM drop to the next gear less painful. That and the fact that the trans shifts so much more smoothly and quickly than the 4 speed did. It's almost transformed the driving experience around town.

if ur racing you tend to want to over rev first cause of the ratio difference between 1st and 2nd that way when you shift to second your right in the sweet spot
