Are starters the same for 7.3s and 6.0s?

Hello friends, I have an '01 7.3. My starter mounted solenoid is giving me trouble. I have a two bolt starter ('99-'00 seem to come with a three bolt starter). The parts stores are able to come up with a solenoid for the three hole, which is 20 percent bigger than the two hole style, but have no parts numbers for the two hole style and tell me that they can not order it and to buy a whole new/rebuilt starter.

Looking around the 'net' to find a starter mounted solenoid, I have found some on flee bay that say they are for the starters of Ford Diesels '01-'08. This will cover the years of most of the 7.3s and 6.0s. Would any of you Brothers know if the starters the same for these years and engine sizes.

Thank-you

Hello Bullitt390,
Thanks for the Pictures. My 7.3 starter is the two hole ('01+)with the offset body. The solenoid that is on it is a lot smaller than the solenoid from the three hole 7.3 start that is pictured above it.

My good friend SpringerPop posted a url to try and I will do that when they are open for business.

bismic,
Is that part # 6C2Z-11002-AA for the two hole starter? I do not think any of the other starter solenoids will work on that starter.
Tousley Ford is a great sponsor, but the exploded views of the starters are all for three hole and are not of my style of starter.
http://www.tousleyfordparts.com/part...=101&maxRow=10

Thank-you

SpringerPop:
The solenoids between two-bolt and three-bolt should not interchange,

The three-bolt units are Mitsubishi-designed, with planetary gear-reduction. Those starters are most-likely to completely recover their abilities with a simple solenoid change.

The two-bolt units are NipponDenso designed, and are off-set gear-reduction types.

As you can see, they are completely different, and should not be expected to interchange.

Here's a page from Nation's web site with repair stuff for Denso solenoids.
Denso Starter Contacts, starter repair kits, starter solenoid parts, solenoid contacts, starter repair

You might give 'em a call.

Tousley shows only one starter for all those model years (01 - 07) and it is the three bolt unit in the pics (ie the part numbers are the same for all those years). I am not familiar w/ the two bolt model - sorry. Maybe one of our Techs can shed some light on the model variances. I assumed that the three bolt would fit even though you have a two-bolt on there. Maybe that was a bad assumption, but I don't think so. Clearly the starter components (ie solenoids) won't interchange though and it doesn't appear that Ford has individual components for your unit.

Edit -
Maybe this thread will help:

Are you just wanting to swap the solenoids or swap the entire starter?

To be completely honest, I wouldn't be able to tell you if the solenoid portions of the starters are identical between the 6.0L and 7.3L later two bolt style starters. But what I can tell you is this. If you happen to have an early 7.3L with the larger three bolt style starter in need of replacement, the later two bolt version WILL bolt in and work. BUT, just make sure the starter is installed with the solenoid situated toward the engine block (it can be installed either way relatively easily too), failing which will result in the starter gear only spinning when you turn the ignition key to the CRANK position. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks Mike. Do you know if Ford even sells the two bolt versions? The parts stores all list only one part - the three bolt starter.

To be honest, I haven't really needed to do much work on any 7.3L lately. But the last time I installed a two bolt version, was what was listed as a CHANGE UP from the three bolt version if I recall correctly. But this was many years ago.

I know that my starter is 'good' and want to stay with the two hole style and I am more into repair of what I have and how it works and save the money for my PMS (PowerStroke Mod Syndrome)

I would reckon you have a local alternator/starter rebuilder near you who would have solenoids available if you wanted to go that route.

Other than that does your 7.3 solenoid have any numbers stamped on it? I wouldn't trust the eBay auctions on being definitive in their descriptions on what fits what.

Sometimes you can get solenoid repair kits that replace the contacts, and only cost about $8. But again the caveat is you'll need a local rebuilder or some source online.

It's the way it has become to just replace the whole unit rather than repair what is defective or replace what is defective.

I have been talking to some Brother on the 7.3 forum and they are suggesting to not just get a new solenoid but to repair the one on there with new contacts and a new plunger for around 15.00 at
Denso Starter Contacts, starter repair kits, starter solenoid parts, solenoid contacts, starter repair
